Why browser tab audio is missing from a recording
Find out why a browser tab recording has no sound, check the capture source and browser sharing options, then fix playback or audio settings.
Your recording shows the browser tab, but the video is silent. This can happen when the tab was shared without its audio, when the sound came from a different app, or when the recording plays through the wrong output.
Use the Screen Recorder to make a short test, then check whether the sound is missing from the captured file or only difficult to hear during playback.
Make a short test recording
- Open the Screen Recorder. Choose to capture a browser tab, rather than the whole screen or a separate window.
- When your browser asks what to share, select the tab that will play the sound. If the chooser offers an audio-sharing option, enable it. Its wording and availability vary by browser.
- Start a simple sound in that tab, such as a short clip you can replay. Record a few seconds, then stop and play the recording.
- If you need to narrate, enable microphone recording separately. Speak while the tab plays, then listen for your voice and the tab sound in the test recording.

What the result means
The recording has video but no sound
The tab may have been shared without audio, or the browser did not provide audio for that capture. Make another short recording and check the browser's sharing chooser before you begin. A microphone recording can still work even when tab audio is absent, because those are separate sources.
Your voice is audible, but the tab is silent
The microphone is being captured, but the browser tab's audio is not. Check that you selected the tab that is actually playing sound and enabled tab audio in the sharing chooser, if that option is available.
Tab sound is audible, but your voice is missing
The tab capture is working. Check that microphone recording is enabled in the Screen Recorder and that the browser has permission to use the microphone. If you need to test the input first, use the Microphone Test to check that its level responds when you speak.
The recording has sound, but it is very quiet
The captured audio may be at a low level, or your playback device may be turned down. Raise the device volume and check the selected output before changing your recording setup. If only one source is quiet, check that source's volume in the tab or microphone settings.
A normal test works, but one video or service is silent
Some sites restrict audio capture for protected content, and some playback methods do not share sound with the browser. Try another ordinary sound in a tab. If that records normally, the restriction is likely tied to the specific content or service.
How to fix it
- Share the tab that is making the sound. If several tabs are open, select the one playing audio in the browser's sharing chooser. Selecting a window or the entire screen may not offer the same tab-audio capture.
- Enable audio sharing in the chooser. Look for an audio checkbox or switch when you select a browser tab. If the browser does not offer one, try an up-to-date version of Chrome or Edge on a computer. Available capture options depend on the browser and operating system.
- Check the tab's volume. Make sure the site is playing, its own player is not muted, and the browser tab is not muted. Muting a tab's playback can leave the recording without the sound you expect.
- Check the computer's output device. On Windows 11, open Settings › System › Sound › Volume mixer and check the browser's volume and output device. On macOS, open System Settings › Sound › Output and select the headphones or speakers you expect to hear.
- Allow screen capture on a Mac. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and check the screen recording permission for your browser. The setting may be called Screen Recording or Screen & System Audio Recording, depending on your macOS version. If you change it, quit and reopen the browser before testing again.
- Close other capture or audio apps. Video-call, recording, or audio-routing software can change the active device or interfere with a test. Close those apps, reload the page, and make a short recording again.
Why choosing a tab matters
Browser screen sharing can capture different things. A tab capture is designed to share that tab's picture and, when supported and selected, its audio. A window or full-screen capture may include the picture without providing the same audio source. Sound from another desktop app is not the same as sound generated in the selected browser tab.
Microphone audio is also separate from tab audio. Turning on one does not automatically turn on the other. If a recording needs both narration and tab sound, test them together before capturing a long tutorial or presentation.
Screen Recorder runs in your browser, and recordings stay on your device. Nothing you record is uploaded.
