How to record a browser tab with its audio
Record a browser tab with its sound using TooLab Screen Recorder. Learn what to select, how to include audio, and what to check if the video is silent.
You can record a video or presentation in a browser tab without capturing your whole desktop. The key is to select the tab in the browser's sharing prompt and include its audio, if that option is available.
Use the Screen Recorder to capture a tab, with optional microphone and camera input. It works on computers, not phones. The steps below help you check that the recording includes the sound you want.
Record a browser tab with audio
- Open the Screen Recorder on your computer. Choose a browser tab as the recording source when you begin sharing.
- In the browser's sharing prompt, select the tab that is playing the sound. Do not choose the whole screen or a different window if you only want that tab.
- Look for an option to share or include tab audio, and enable it. The wording and location vary by browser. In Chrome or Edge, the tab-sharing prompt commonly offers a checkbox for tab audio.
- Start the recording from the Screen Recorder. If the page is paused, start its audio after sharing begins. Let it play for a few seconds so you can check the result.
- Stop the recording and play it back using the recorder's available controls. Check both the picture and sound before relying on the file.
If you also want your voice, enable the recorder's microphone option and allow microphone access when the browser asks. That records microphone sound in addition to the tab's sound. You can use the camera option too, if you want camera video in the recording.
What the result means
The video and tab sound are both clear
The browser shared the right tab and its audio. If you will record a longer session, make a short test first and check that the tab stays selected and continues playing.
The video recorded, but it is silent
The tab may not have been shared with audio, or your browser may not offer tab-audio capture for that source. Repeat the recording and look carefully at the sharing prompt. Choose the tab itself and enable its audio option if one appears.
You hear your voice, but not the tab
The microphone was captured, but the tab audio was not. Microphone audio and tab audio are separate sources. Enable tab audio in the browser's sharing prompt as well as the microphone option in the recorder, if you need both.
You hear other sounds, but not the tab
You may have selected a full screen or window capture rather than a tab with audio. Choose the source tab in the sharing prompt. Tab capture is useful when you want the sound from that page without unrelated sounds from other apps.
How to fix silent tab recordings
- Check the tab's sound. Play the video or audio in the tab before recording. Make sure the page, media player, and computer volume are not muted.
- Choose the tab audio option. Stop the current recording and share the tab again. In the browser prompt, select the correct tab and enable its audio option if shown. A microphone setting alone will not capture the tab's sound.
- Try Chrome or Edge on a computer. Tab-audio capture depends on browser support. If your sharing prompt has no option for tab audio, try a current desktop version of Chrome or Edge. Screen Recorder does not work on phones.
- Allow screen capture in macOS. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and allow your browser. Some macOS versions call this setting Screen Recording. Quit and reopen the browser if you change the permission.
- Allow the microphone if you need your voice. On Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone and allow microphone access for desktop apps. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and allow your browser. These permissions affect microphone capture, not whether tab audio is selected.
- Make a short new test. Close the sharing prompt, start a fresh recording, and check the saved playback. Some protected video or audio services restrict capture, so a tab may share its picture without its sound even when other sites work.
Tab audio and microphone audio are different
Tab audio is the sound produced by the selected browser tab, such as a video playing on a page. Microphone audio is sound picked up from your computer's built-in microphone or a connected headset. Choose tab audio for the page's sound, microphone audio for your voice, or both for a recording that includes each.
The Screen Recorder runs in your browser. Recordings made with it stay on your device, and nothing you record is uploaded.
