Touch gestures stopped after a display repair?

Check whether the touchscreen still tracks one- and two-finger movement after a display repair, then isolate a screen fault from a setting or app issue.

Since the display repair, swipes, pinch gestures, or other touch movements no longer work as expected. The cause could be the screen assembly, a protector or case, or a setting or app that handles gestures differently.

Start by checking whether the browser receives touch input across the display. The Touch Screen Test can show multiple touch points and areas where contact is not detected. It helps separate a screen input problem from an issue inside one app.

Test touch tracking across the screen

  1. Open the Touch Screen Test on the repaired device. Use the screen you are having trouble with, not a different computer or phone.
  2. Touch the center of the screen, then slowly drag your finger toward each edge and corner. Watch whether the on-screen touch point follows smoothly or disappears in the same area each time.
  3. Place two fingers on the screen with space between them. Move them slowly in different directions and change the distance between them. Check whether both points remain separate and follow your fingers.
  4. Repeat the movements in portrait and landscape orientation if the device rotates. Note any dead areas, sudden jumps, or places where one of two touches disappears.
  5. Try the same gesture in the app where it stopped working. If the test tracks your fingers but the app does not respond, the problem may be in the app or its settings rather than the touch panel.

Use light, ordinary finger pressure. Avoid pressing hard on a recently repaired display. If a protector or case covers the screen, test once without it, as long as you can remove it safely.

What the result means

Touch points follow smoothly across the screen

The browser is receiving touch input in the areas you tested. If a particular app still ignores swipes or pinch gestures, check that app's gesture controls, permissions, and update status. A browser test cannot confirm that every app recognizes gestures correctly.

The same strip or corner misses touches repeatedly

A repeatable dead area can point to a touch layer problem, sometimes called a digitizer fault. It can also happen when a case or screen protector covers or presses against the edge. Remove those accessories and test again before treating the panel as faulty.

One finger works, but two points merge or disappear

The display may be registering basic touch while multi-touch tracking is unreliable. Some gestures need two separate contacts at the same time. If this happens throughout the test without a protector or case, contact the repair shop and describe the two-finger result.

The test works, but gestures fail in several apps

The touch panel is reporting movement to the browser, but the operating system or an accessibility setting may be changing how touches are handled. Review gesture and touch settings before arranging another repair. Keep in mind that the test does not diagnose every operating-system gesture feature.

How to fix it

  1. Remove anything covering the screen. Take off the case and, if it lifts without force, the screen protector. Wipe the display with a soft, dry cloth, then repeat the test. A protector fitted too close to a repaired edge can interfere with touches there.
  2. Restart the device. Restart it fully, unlock it, and test again before opening the problem app. This clears temporary input or app-state problems without changing your data.
  3. Check whether one app is responsible. Try the gesture in another app and in the browser test. If only one app fails, look for its gesture or navigation options and install its available update. If all apps fail in the same screen area, focus on the display and repair.
  4. Review accessibility touch settings. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings › Accessibility › Touch and review options such as Touch Accommodations and AssistiveTouch. On Android, open Settings › Accessibility and review touch, timing, or interaction controls. Names and locations vary by manufacturer. Do not turn off a feature you rely on without noting its current setting first.
  5. Check display orientation on a Windows 11 touchscreen PC. Open Settings › System › Display and confirm that Display orientation matches how the screen is positioned. This is not a touchscreen calibration setting, but an incorrect orientation can make input appear to land in the wrong place. A standard Mac does not have a built-in touch display; for trackpad gestures, check System Settings › Trackpad instead.
  6. Ask the repair shop to inspect the screen assembly. If the same area misses touches in the browser test after removing accessories and restarting, contact the shop that performed the repair. Ask them to check the touch layer and its connections, and share which areas or gestures fail.

When it may be a repair issue

A touch problem that began immediately after a display replacement deserves a follow-up with the repair provider, especially if the test shows a stable dead zone, erratic movement, or failed multi-touch across more than one app. Those patterns can result from a damaged or incompatible display assembly, or a connection that needs inspection. A browser test cannot identify the exact part or confirm how it was installed.

Do not press the screen, bend the device, or try to open it to reseat a connector. Take a short note of the steps that fail and, if useful, a photo or video of the test result. Ask the shop about its repair warranty before paying for another repair.

What the browser test can and cannot check

The Touch Screen Test shows touch points that the browser receives and can reveal areas that repeatedly fail to register. It does not measure how firmly the screen responds, verify stylus pressure, or test every gesture recognized by the device's operating system. Some gestures are handled before an app or browser receives them, so a successful test does not rule out a software setting or app-specific problem.

The test runs on the device you are checking, so you can compare the result before and after removing a case or protector without sending touch recordings elsewhere.
