Tilt values change after connecting a charger?
Compare tilt readings before and after plugging in a charger, learn what a change means, and check permissions, movement, or charger interference.
Your phone or tablet reports different tilt values as soon as you connect a charger. It may look like a sensor problem, but a small change can also happen because the device shifted, the cable pulled on it, or the browser restarted sensor access.
Compare the readings in the same position, first unplugged and then charging. The Sensors Test lets you view device motion and related sensor readings in your browser, so you can check whether the change repeats.
Compare tilt values before and after charging
- Open the Sensors Test on the phone or tablet you want to check. Allow sensor access if your browser asks for permission.
- Place the device on a steady, level surface. Keep it still and observe the tilt or motion readings shown by the test. Note the values, or take a screenshot for your own comparison.
- Connect the charger without lifting or turning the device. Wait a few seconds, then check whether the readings settle at a different value or continue to move.
- Unplug the charger and repeat the comparison. For a useful result, do this two or three times while keeping the device in the same position.
If the device must be held to reach the charging port, set it down again before comparing. Even a small change in angle can change the reported tilt. Keep a magnetic case, stand, or mount in the same place during each test, unless you are specifically checking whether it affects the reading.
What the result means
The reading changes only when you move the device
This is the expected behavior. Tilt readings describe the device's orientation or movement, so they change when you adjust its position. A cable can tug the phone or tablet slightly as you plug it in, even if the movement is hard to notice.
Repeat the test with the device firmly supported. If the values match when its position is the same, the charger connection alone is probably not changing the tilt reading.
The reading changes each time you plug in the charger
First check whether the device shifts as the connector goes in. If it stays still and the change repeats, compare with another cable and charger. A magnetic charger or nearby magnetic accessory can affect compass readings. That is different from a basic tilt measurement, but sensor tools may display several kinds of sensor data together.
A browser test can show that readings differ. It cannot prove that the charger is electrically unsafe or identify the exact cause. If only compass direction changes, move magnetic accessories away and compare again.
The reading drifts while the device is still
Small fluctuations can occur as sensors and the browser update their estimates. A steady, large change on a flat surface is more useful to investigate than a brief jump at the moment you connect the cable. Try again after closing and reopening the test, and compare with the charger unplugged.
The test shows no motion data
The browser may not have permission to use motion sensors, or the device and browser may not expose the required sensor data. This does not by itself mean the sensor is broken. Check the browser's site permissions and try a browser that supports the relevant sensor features.
How to fix an unexpected change
- Keep the device still while connecting it. Put it on a stable surface and leave the cable loose enough that it does not pull the device. Compare readings only after the device has settled.
- Check browser sensor access. In Chrome on Android, open Settings › Site settings › Motion sensors and make sure access is allowed if that option is available. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings › Apps › Safari › Motion & Orientation Access and enable it for Safari. The exact options can vary by browser version.
- Reload the test and grant permission again. Close the page, reopen the Sensors Test, and accept a sensor permission prompt if one appears. Every tool that uses device sensors may need permission before it can show readings.
- Remove nearby magnetic accessories for a comparison. Move a magnetic phone mount, wallet, or stand away from the device. This is especially useful if the compass changes, since magnetic fields can affect compass readings more directly than tilt.
- Try another charger and cable. Use a known-good cable and charger, and test them separately if possible. Keep the device on the same surface so the comparison is about the charging setup, not a change in angle.
- Restart the device. A restart can clear a browser or sensor service that stopped updating properly. Run the same still-device comparison again afterward.
Windows 11 and macOS do not provide a general system setting that turns browser tilt sensors on or off. If you are testing a supported computer, check the browser's site controls beside the address bar for any sensor permission the browser lists. Some computers do not have motion sensors that a browser can access.
When the sensor may need service
If the readings jump or remain far off while the device is stationary, repeat the test with the charger disconnected and with magnetic accessories removed. Then compare in another browser, if available. If the same problem appears across browsers and continues after a restart, the sensor or device software may be at fault.
If the problem began after a drop, repair, or liquid exposure, contact the device maker or a repair shop. A browser test can document the behavior, but it cannot identify a damaged sensor or confirm that a repair is needed.
Why tilt and compass readings can differ
A tilt reading describes how the device is angled. Compass direction describes which way it faces, and can be affected by magnetic fields nearby. Some device features combine readings from multiple sensors, so one displayed value may react differently from another when you connect a charger or move an accessory.
Use the same device position and compare one change at a time. This helps separate a real repeatable effect from a small movement during connection.
