External monitor resolution keeps changing on a tablet?

Find why an external monitor keeps changing resolution when connected to a tablet, then check the cable, display settings and connection.

An external monitor connected to a tablet may suddenly look blurry, show larger icons, or rearrange windows. The resolution can change when the tablet wakes, the cable shifts, or the display connection is renegotiated.

Start by checking whether the reported resolution changes, or whether only the size of text and windows changes. Then test the cable and adapter, review the display settings your tablet provides, and isolate whether the problem happens after sleep or in one app.

Find the cause

  1. Open Screens while the monitor is connected. Note the reported resolution and scale for the external display. If the problem occurs again, check whether either value changed.
  2. Look at the monitor's own information screen, if it has one. Compare the input resolution it reports with the resolution shown in the tablet's display settings.
  3. Reconnect the cable at both ends. If you use an adapter, hub, or dock, test the monitor connected directly to the tablet when possible. Change only one cable or adapter at a time.
  4. Notice when the change happens. Check whether it follows waking from sleep, rotating the tablet, unplugging power, switching monitor inputs, or opening a particular app in full screen.
  5. Test the monitor and cable with another computer, or test the tablet with another monitor. This helps separate a tablet setting from a monitor, cable, or adapter problem.

A browser test can show the screen details available to the browser, but it cannot control the tablet's display mode. Use the operating system's display settings to change resolution or scaling.

What the result means

The reported resolution changes too

The tablet or display connection is switching modes. A loose connection, adapter, dock, power change, or unsupported display mode may cause the tablet to choose a different resolution. If the monitor's own information screen also shows a new input resolution, the change is not just a scaling issue.

The resolution stays the same, but text and icons change size

The screen may be using a different scaling or zoom level, rather than a different resolution. Scaling changes the size of interface elements while keeping the display resolution the same. An app can also change its own zoom or layout.

It happens after sleep or reconnecting the cable

The tablet and monitor may not be agreeing on a display mode when they reconnect. Some adapters or docks take longer to wake or may renegotiate the connection when power changes.

It happens only in one app

The tablet's display mode may be stable, while the app changes its layout or rendering in full screen. Check the app's zoom, full-screen, and display options before changing system settings.

How to fix it

  1. Reseat the connections. Unplug the video cable and adapter, then reconnect them firmly. Check for lint or visible damage in the ports, and avoid moving the cable while testing.
  2. Test without extra adapters. Connect the tablet directly to the monitor if both support the same connection. If you need a hub or dock, connect its power supply if it has one, and test another port on it.
  3. Select a supported display mode. On a Windows 11 tablet, open Settings › System › Display, select the external display, and choose a resolution marked recommended. For refresh-rate options, open Settings › System › Display › Advanced display. On a Mac, open System Settings › Displays and select an available resolution for the external display. Do not select a mode the monitor does not support.
  4. Check the tablet's display options. On an iPad, open Settings › Display & Brightness. iPadOS generally chooses the external display mode automatically, and available controls depend on the iPad and display. On an Android tablet, check Settings › Display for external display options. Menu names and manual resolution controls vary by manufacturer.
  5. Check scaling and app zoom. If the resolution stays steady but items look larger or smaller, restore the tablet's usual display scaling or the app's zoom level. On Windows 11, check Settings › System › Display for Scale. On macOS, review the available options in System Settings › Displays.
  6. Restart the display connection. Turn the monitor off and on, then restart the tablet. If the issue occurs after sleep, disconnect and reconnect the display once the tablet is awake.
  7. Install system updates. Updates can resolve compatibility problems between a tablet, its graphics software, and an external display. Use the tablet maker's normal update settings, and test again after updating.

When the cable or display may be faulty

If the resolution changes when the cable is touched, the screen briefly goes black, or the monitor loses its signal, test with a different compatible cable and adapter. If the same tablet works reliably with another monitor, but the original monitor keeps changing modes with more than one source, the monitor or its input may need service.

If the problem follows one adapter across different monitors, stop using that adapter for important work and replace it with a compatible one. If the tablet's built-in display also flickers or changes unexpectedly, the issue may be with the tablet and may need professional repair.

Why tablets may choose a different resolution

Resolution is the number of pixels used to draw the image. Scaling changes how large text and interface elements appear without necessarily changing that pixel count. The two can look similar when the picture becomes blurry or the desktop layout shifts.

A tablet and monitor negotiate a display mode when they connect. A dock or adapter adds another link in that connection, and a mode with a higher resolution or refresh rate needs more video bandwidth. If the connection is interrupted or a component cannot support the selected mode, the tablet may switch to another available mode. A browser screen report helps you notice a change, but the tablet's display settings and a direct cable test are the better ways to confirm and fix it.
