What to look for

  • Dead pixels: dots that stay black on white, red, green and blue.
  • Stuck pixels: dots that stay one color on black.
  • Light bleeding: bright patches near the edges on black. Dim the room for this one.
  • Banding: visible steps in the gray fade instead of a smooth change.
  • Sharpness: the fine checkerboard should look like even gray. Ripples or stripes mean the picture is being scaled.
  • Edges: the outer line of the grid should be visible on all four sides.
