Graphics tablet display fullscreen: what to check
Check why a graphics tablet display opens apps on the wrong screen, appears mirrored, or shows a strange fullscreen layout, then fix the display settings.
Your drawing app opens full screen on the laptop instead of the pen display, or the tablet shows the same desktop as your main monitor. Sometimes the app fills the screen but the canvas looks cropped or unusually large.
First check whether the computer recognizes the tablet display as a separate screen. The Screens tool can show connected screens and their resolution and scale, and lets you display a color test on a chosen screen. Then you can check the operating system and the drawing app separately.
Check the tablet display
- Open Screens on the computer connected to the graphics tablet. Look for the tablet display in the list of screens.
- Choose the tablet display for the color test. Check that the test appears on the pen display, not on the laptop or another monitor.
- Open your drawing app in a window and move it onto the tablet display. Use the app's own full-screen or presentation option, if it has one.
- Exit full screen and reopen it once. Note whether the app returns to the tablet display or jumps to another screen.
A graphics tablet display is an additional monitor when the computer recognizes it as one. The pen surface and the display are related hardware, but the operating system still controls where windows open and which screen an app uses for full screen.
What the result means
The tablet appears as its own screen
The computer sees the display separately. If the color test appears there, its basic screen output is working. A full-screen problem is more likely to come from the display arrangement, the app's saved window position, or the app's own full-screen setting.
The same image appears on both screens
The displays are probably mirrored or duplicated. In this mode, both screens show the same desktop, so you cannot use the tablet as a separate workspace until you switch to an extended desktop.
The tablet is missing from the screen list
The computer or browser may not be reporting it as a separate display. Check the operating system's display settings first. If it is missing there too, inspect the video cable, adapter, power, and tablet driver before troubleshooting the drawing app.
The test appears, but the app is cropped or oversized
The display is receiving an image, but the resolution, scaling, orientation, or app layout may not match what you expect. A browser test cannot change those settings or control how another app handles full screen.
How to fix it
- Set the displays to extend. In Windows 11, open Settings › System › Display, select the tablet screen, and choose the option to extend the displays under the multiple displays setting. On macOS, open System Settings › Displays and set the tablet up as an extended display rather than mirroring, if that choice is available.
- Match the screen arrangement to your desk. In Windows 11, open Settings › System › Display and drag the numbered display rectangles so they match the physical positions of the screens. On macOS, open System Settings › Displays and arrange the screens to match their positions. This affects where the pointer and windows move between displays.
- Move the app before entering full screen. Exit full screen, drag the drawing app window onto the tablet display, and maximize it there before using the app's full-screen command. Some apps remember the screen used the last time they entered full screen. If the app keeps returning to the wrong monitor, see why full-screen apps open on the wrong monitor.
- Check resolution and scale. In Windows 11, select the tablet under Settings › System › Display and review Display resolution and Scale. On macOS, open System Settings › Displays and review the available resolution or scaling choices. Use the recommended setting as a starting point, then check the drawing app again.
- Check the app's full-screen mode. Some apps hide their menus while keeping the desktop available; others use a separate full-screen space or presentation view. Try the app's menu command as well as its window control, and check the app's display or workspace settings if it has them.
- Reconnect the display if it is still missing. Confirm that the tablet is powered on and that its video cable is connected to a compatible output. Try a different port or cable if available, then restart the computer. Install or update the tablet manufacturer's driver only from its official support source.
When it's the display or connection
If the tablet does not appear in the operating system's display settings after you reconnect it and restart, the computer may not be receiving its video signal. A USB cable used for pen data does not always carry video, and an adapter or dock can also limit which display connections work. Check the tablet's connection instructions and try a direct video connection where possible.
If the screen appears but stays black, flickers, or loses its picture across different apps and after testing another compatible cable or computer, the display or its port may need repair. Contact the tablet maker if it is under warranty. Avoid repeatedly unplugging a connector that feels loose or damaged.
Why full screen can look different from a second monitor
Full screen is an app behavior, not a separate display arrangement. Extending the desktop lets each monitor show different content; mirroring makes them show the same content. An app can still choose the wrong monitor even when the desktop is extended correctly.
Screen scaling can also make menus and controls look larger on one display without changing the actual resolution. The Screens tool reports the details the browser can access, but it cannot identify every graphics tablet model or confirm which screen a desktop drawing app will choose. Use it to check which display is visible, then make the final arrangement in your computer's display settings.
