How to test browser features in Edge on a work PC
Check which browser features Edge reports on a work PC, confirm what actually works, and tell a browser limit from an IT policy or permission.
A feature works on your personal computer but is missing in Edge at work. Or a website says your browser does not support something you need. On a managed PC, the cause could be an older Edge version, a blocked permission, or an organization policy, not a broken computer.
Start by checking what Edge reports, then test the feature in the same profile and look for restrictions. TooLab's Browser Info shows Edge's version, engine, permissions, codecs, privacy details, and supported features.
Check browser features in Edge
- Open Browser Info in the Edge profile you use for work. Review the reported browser version, engine, permissions, and supported features.
- In a new tab, open
edge://settings/help. Check the Edge version and whether an update is available. On a managed computer, do not try to override an update policy; your IT team may control when updates install. - Identify the exact feature the work site needs, such as screen sharing, a camera, a microphone, or a video format. Try it on that site in the same Edge profile. If it asks for permission, note whether Edge shows a prompt or blocks access.
- Open
edge://managementto see whether Edge is managed. You can also openedge://policyto view policies applied to the browser. Do not change policy values or try to bypass a restriction. - If a graphics or display feature seems involved, check the device context with System Info. It reports processor, graphics, screen, battery, and network details, which can help you describe the PC when asking for support.
Keep the test in the normal work profile. Private browsing and another profile can have different permissions, extensions, and policies, so they may not reproduce the problem you see at work.
What the results mean
Browser Info lists the feature as supported
Edge reports that it has the relevant browser capability. That does not guarantee every website can use it. A site may need permission, a secure connection, or its own support for that feature. Test it on the actual work site before deciding it is available there.
The feature is missing or shown as unsupported
Edge may not provide that capability in its current version or configuration. Check the version at edge://settings/help and retest after an approved update. Some features also depend on the operating system, hardware, or browser settings, so a supported-feature list is not a promise that every device can use every feature.
The feature is supported, but the site cannot use it
Check the site's permission in Edge and whether a required prompt was denied earlier. If the permission looks allowed but the feature still fails, the site, an extension, security software, or an organization policy may be blocking access.
Edge says it is managed
This is common on work computers. An administrator can set policies that restrict features, permissions, extensions, or updates. The policy page can help you report what is applied, but changing the setting may require your IT team.
How to fix a feature that will not work
- Reload the page and restart Edge. Close the affected tab, reopen it, and try again. This can clear a temporary browser or site problem without changing work settings.
- Check for an approved Edge update. In Edge, open Settings and more › Help and feedback › About Microsoft Edge. If updates are managed or the page says your organization controls them, contact IT rather than installing a different browser build.
- Review the site's permission. In Edge, open Settings › Cookies and site permissions, select the relevant permission, and check whether the work site is blocked. For camera or microphone access, check Camera or Microphone. Change a blocked setting only if your organization allows it.
- Check Windows privacy access. On Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera or Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone. Check device access and app access. A work policy may control these switches, so ask IT if they are unavailable or keep turning off.
- Check macOS privacy access if this is a Mac. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera or System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone, then check whether Edge is allowed. If your Mac is managed, follow your organization's instructions before changing access.
- Check the policy before changing extensions or security settings. Review
edge://policyandedge://management. If a setting is enforced, send the policy name, Edge version, affected website, and Browser Info result to IT. Do not disable required work extensions or security controls to get around it.
Why browser support and work access are different
Browser feature support is only one part of the chain. Edge must provide the capability, the operating system must allow it, the site must request it correctly, and the organization must permit it. For example, Edge can support camera access while Windows or a work policy blocks the camera. A feature can also be available in one profile and unavailable in another because their permissions or extensions differ.
When you contact IT, include the Edge version, the feature you tried, the site address, what happened, and whether edge://management shows that Edge is managed. Do not include passwords, private page contents, or confidential data in screenshots.
