How to capture browser tab audio on a MacBook
Record sound from a browser tab on a MacBook, not just your microphone. Set the capture source, allow macOS access, and troubleshoot silent recordings.
You can hear a video or meeting in your MacBook browser, but your screen recording comes out silent. Often the issue is that the browser is capturing the screen or microphone, not the tab’s audio.
Use the Screen Recorder to capture a browser tab and its sound. This guide covers the tab-sharing choice, the macOS permission that can block capture, and what to try if the recording is still quiet.
Capture a browser tab with its audio
- Open the Screen Recorder on your MacBook. Allow microphone or camera access only if you want to include them.
- Choose to capture a browser tab in the browser’s sharing picker. Select the tab that is playing the sound, rather than the whole screen or a separate window.
- If the picker offers an option to share tab audio, turn it on. Leave the microphone off if you only want the sound coming from the tab.
- Start the recording, then play a few seconds of audio in the selected tab. Stop the capture and listen to the resulting recording.
Use a short test first. A quick playback check can tell you whether the tab audio is included before you record a full presentation, lesson, or demo. If you need your voice as well, enable the microphone too, then check that both sources are audible in the test recording.
What the result means
The tab audio and your voice are both clear
The browser captured the sources you selected. You can record the full session, but make another short check if you change tabs, audio output, or recording settings.
You hear the tab, but not your voice
The tab’s audio is being captured, but the microphone is not included or the selected input is silent. Enable the microphone in the recorder if you want narration, allow microphone access in the browser, and test your input separately.
You hear your voice, but not the tab
The recording is using the microphone, but the browser did not share the tab’s sound. Check that you selected the tab itself and enabled tab audio in the browser’s sharing picker, if that option is available.
The recording is silent
Check that the tab was actually playing sound during capture and that its audio was not muted. Then try a different browser. Sharing choices vary by browser and macOS version, and some browsers may not offer tab audio in the picker.
The tab audio is distorted or much quieter than expected
Check the tab’s own volume, the Mac’s output volume, and any audio processing enabled by the site or app. If your microphone is also on, it may pick up sound from the MacBook speakers and create an echo. Use headphones or turn off the microphone when narration is not needed.
How to fix silent tab audio
- Confirm the tab is producing sound. Play audio in the tab before recording and check that the tab is not muted. A browser’s mute setting can silence that tab even when the MacBook’s volume is turned up.
- Select the tab as the source. Stop the current capture and reopen the browser’s sharing picker. Choose the browser tab that contains the sound, then enable the tab-audio option if it appears. Sharing a screen or window may not include the tab’s audio.
- Allow screen capture in macOS. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, or Screen Recording on some macOS versions. Allow the browser you are using, then quit and reopen it if macOS asks you to restart the app.
- Check the browser’s microphone permission only if needed. If you want to add your voice, use the permission icon near the address bar and allow microphone access. You can also check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and allow the browser there. Tab audio does not require a microphone, so do not turn one on just to capture the tab.
- Try another browser. If the picker has no tab-audio option, test in Chrome or Edge on the MacBook. Browser support and picker controls differ, so a source that is unavailable in one browser may be offered in another.
- Check the source before recording protected media. Some streaming services restrict audio or video capture. If the recording is black or silent only for protected content, the service may be blocking capture, not malfunctioning hardware. Do not try to bypass its restrictions.
Tab audio is different from system audio
Tab audio means sound produced by the browser tab you chose. It does not automatically include audio from other tabs, music apps, system alerts, or a video call in a separate application. If you need to record more than one source, check the sharing options in your browser and make a short test, because the available choices vary.
For a general walkthrough of capturing a tab and its sound, see How to record a browser tab with its audio. The MacBook-specific checks above are useful when macOS permission settings or the browser’s sharing picker are the obstacle.
The Screen Recorder runs in your browser, and recordings stay on your device. Nothing you record is uploaded.
