Blurry text on one monitor connected to a tablet

See why text looks blurry on just one monitor, check its resolution and scaling, then fix Windows, Mac, or tablet settings without guessing.

Text looks sharp on your tablet screen but fuzzy on the monitor beside it, or the other way around. That usually points to a display setting, cable, or app scaling issue, not a problem with your eyes or the text itself.

Compare the two screens first, then check their reported resolution and scale with the Screens tool. You can use the results to narrow down which display setting to change.

Check the blurry monitor

  1. Open Screens and compare the connected screens, their reported resolutions, and their scale values.
  2. On your computer, open the display settings and select the screen where text looks blurry. Use the system's screen-identification feature if you are unsure which display is which.
  3. Check whether that screen is using its recommended resolution and scale. Note the values before changing them.
  4. Open the same webpage or document on both screens. Keep the browser zoom and text size the same so you are comparing like with like.
  5. Move the same app window from one screen to the other. Notice whether the blur follows the screen or stays with the app.

To check for a general display issue rather than text rendering, view the Screens tool's color test on the affected display. It can help show whether the problem affects the whole screen, but it does not measure sharpness or diagnose the panel.

What the result means

Everything looks blurry on one screen

If text, icons, and images all look soft on just one display, check that screen's resolution, scale, cable, and monitor settings. The blur is likely tied to that display's setup rather than one particular app.

Text is blurry, but images look sharp

This can happen when an app or operating system is scaling text, or when font smoothing settings differ. Check the app at its normal zoom, then try the display's recommended scale. On Windows, ClearType can adjust the way text edges appear.

The blur follows one app between screens

The app may not handle different screen scales well. Close and reopen it after moving it to the screen you use most, and check its zoom or display settings. If other apps look sharp on both screens, the monitor may be fine.

Text looks blurry only through a dock or adapter

The dock, adapter, or cable may be limiting the resolution or sending an unexpected display mode. Connect the monitor directly to the tablet if possible, or try another port and cable. Check the displayed resolution again after reconnecting.

How to fix it

  1. Set the display to its recommended resolution. In Windows 11, open Settings › System › Display, select the blurry monitor, and choose the value marked recommended under Display resolution. On a Mac, open System Settings › Displays, select the monitor, and choose the default resolution option if available. A lower-than-native resolution often makes small text look soft.
  2. Use the recommended scale first. In Windows 11, select the monitor in Settings › System › Display and check Scale. On a Mac, use the default display option in System Settings › Displays. If you change scale, sign out or restart the affected app if text remains blurry.
  3. Check the app's zoom. Set the browser or document zoom to its normal level, often 100%, and compare again. If only one app is fuzzy, update it if an update is available, then close and reopen it. Avoid changing the system scale to compensate for one app.
  4. Adjust ClearType on Windows. Search Windows for Adjust ClearType text, open the tool, and follow its samples for the affected display. This changes how text edges are smoothed. It cannot correct a wrong screen resolution or a poor cable connection.
  5. Reconnect the display directly. Unplug and reconnect the cable at both ends. If you use a USB-C dock or video adapter, test a direct connection or another adapter. A different cable or port can reveal whether the connection is restricting the display mode.
  6. Check the monitor's own picture settings. Use its on-screen menu to restore default picture settings or select a computer-focused mode if it has one. If the display is a TV, disable extra sharpening or image processing and check for a PC input mode.

On a tablet running iPadOS or Android, the system may not offer the same per-monitor resolution and scale controls as Windows or macOS. Check the external display's own menu and the app's text-size or zoom settings. Some apps do not adapt cleanly when moved to an external screen.

When the screen or connection may be faulty

If the recommended resolution is selected and text still looks soft in multiple apps, test the monitor with another cable, port, and computer. A damaged cable or adapter can cause display problems, and a monitor can also have a focus or image-processing setting that makes text look less clear. If the blur stays with the monitor across different devices and connections, check its warranty or ask a repair shop to inspect it.

If the blur stays in one app instead, contact the app's support or use a different app for now. A browser display check can report screen information, but it cannot repair a panel or confirm that every graphics setting is correct.
