How to test wireless charging speed on an Android phone

Measure your Android phone's wireless charge rate in percent per minute, compare chargers fairly, and check whether heat or placement is slowing it down.

Your phone is on a wireless charger, but the battery percentage barely moves. The pad may be misaligned, the phone may be warm, or the charger may simply be delivering less power than expected.

Use the Charger & Cable Test to check the phone's reported charging state and rate in percent per minute. It gives you a way to compare setups, but it does not measure the wireless charger's output in watts.

Test the wireless charging rate

  1. Open the Charger & Cable Test in your Android phone's browser. The tool can show readings only if the browser reports battery information for the phone.
  2. Connect the wireless pad to its power adapter, then place the phone on the pad. Center it carefully and check that the phone's charging indicator appears.
  3. Keep the tool open while the phone charges. Note the battery percentage, charging state, and rate in percent per minute once the reading has settled.
  4. For a useful comparison, test from a similar starting charge each time, such as between 20% and 50%. Keep the phone case, screen brightness, room temperature, and phone position the same.
  5. Repeat the test with another pad or power adapter, changing one part at a time. If the percentage does not change during a short check, wait longer before deciding that charging has stopped.

Keep the phone on a hard, open surface while testing. Do not leave it charging on a bed or under fabric, and stop if it becomes unusually hot.

What the result means

The rate is steady and the battery percentage rises

The phone is charging wirelessly at the rate reported by its battery system. This does not establish the charger's exact output: percent per minute depends on the phone's battery size, current charge, temperature, and charging controls.

The rate is low but above zero

The phone is receiving charge, but the setup may be slower than another pad or than wired charging. Check alignment, the power adapter, case thickness, and temperature before treating the result as a fault.

The charging state changes or the rate keeps dropping

The phone may be shifting on the pad, warming up, or nearing a charge level where the phone reduces charging speed. Recheck the setup from a similar battery percentage after the phone cools.

The browser shows no battery or charging information

The browser does not expose the battery information the test needs on this device. This is a browser or platform limit, not proof that wireless charging is broken. Check the phone's own charging indicator, or try a different supported browser.

The phone does not show that it is charging

The phone is not detecting wireless power at that moment. Reposition it and check the pad's power connection. If the charging indicator still does not appear, continue with the checks below.

How to fix slow or inconsistent wireless charging

  1. Center the phone on the pad. Move it slowly until the phone's charging indicator appears, then leave it still. The charging coils need to line up, and a small shift can interrupt charging.
  2. Check the adapter and cable powering the pad. Use the adapter recommended for the pad, with a cable that fits securely. A wireless pad connected to a weak adapter may charge slowly even if the pad itself supports faster charging.
  3. Test without the phone case. Remove a thick case, magnetic accessory, or metal plate temporarily. If charging improves, check whether the case or accessory is compatible with your charging pad before using it again.
  4. Let the phone cool. Take it off the pad and let it return to a normal temperature before testing again. Avoid charging in direct sun or near a heat source. Phones often reduce charging speed when they get hot.
  5. Check the phone's charging controls. Open Settings › Battery and look for a charging limit, battery protection, or charging optimization setting. The name and location vary by Android manufacturer. If a limit is enabled, the phone may slow or stop charging near that limit.
  6. Restart the phone and retest. A restart can clear a temporary reporting or charging problem. Repeat the test using the same pad, adapter, placement, and starting charge so the results are comparable.

When the charger or phone may be faulty

Test the phone on a second wireless pad that is known to work, and test the original pad with another compatible phone if you can. If your phone charges on the second pad but not the first, inspect the original pad, its cable, and its adapter. If it fails on multiple working pads, check the phone's support options or warranty.

If charging starts and stops when the phone is moved slightly, the pad may be unstable or the phone's charging coil may need inspection. Do not open the phone or pad yourself. Contact the manufacturer or a repair shop, especially if the phone has been dropped or exposed to liquid.

Why percent per minute is not a watt reading

Percent per minute tells you how quickly the phone's reported battery percentage is changing. The battery percentage is rounded, and the tool does not know the battery's exact capacity or measure voltage and current through the wireless connection. That means it cannot calculate the charger's real power output.

Use the rate to compare two setups on the same phone under similar conditions, not to compare different phone models or verify a charger's wattage rating. A short test can also look uneven because the percentage changes in steps, so compare longer, similar periods rather than relying on a single moment.

The test reads charging information reported by the browser on your phone; it does not directly measure power at the charging pad.
