Why your screen recording shows a black window
Find out why a screen recording shows a black window, then fix the capture source, permissions, or app settings with a browser-based test.
You start a screen recording, but the video shows a black window instead of the app you need. Sometimes the whole recording is black. Other times, the desktop appears normally and only one app or video stays dark.
The cause is usually the selected capture source, an operating system permission, or a restriction in the app being recorded. Test the same window with TooLab's Screen Recorder to see whether the problem follows the app or the recording setup. It runs in a desktop browser, not on phones.
Check the recording
- Open the Screen Recorder on your computer. Choose to record a screen, window, or browser tab, then select the source that contains the content you want.
- If the browser asks for permission to share your screen, approve it and confirm the correct screen, window, or tab in its sharing picker.
- Record a few seconds while keeping the target window open and visible. If you need audio too, select the relevant sound option in the recorder.
- Stop the recording and play it back. Check whether the desktop, the target app, and any video inside the app appear in the saved recording.
For a useful comparison, record a normal desktop window and then the problem window using the same source type. If one is visible and the other is black, the issue is likely specific to that app or its content.
What the result means
The entire recording is black
The browser may not have received a usable screen share. The wrong source may have been selected, the share permission may have been denied, or the operating system may be blocking screen capture. Choose the source again and check the permission fixes below.
The desktop appears, but one window is black
The screen share itself is working, so the cause is probably limited to that app. It may use a graphics method the browser cannot capture, be running with different permissions, or contain protected video. Try recording the whole screen instead of only that window.
The app appears, but a video inside it is black
Streaming services and some video apps protect their content from copying. The player can appear black in a recording even when the rest of the app is visible. This is usually intentional, not a fault with your display or the screen recorder.
The recording starts normally, then turns black or freezes
The selected window may have been minimized, moved to another desktop, or covered while recording. Keep it open and visible during a test. If the problem happens only with one app, check its graphics or capture settings.
How to fix it
- Select the source again. In the browser's sharing picker, choose the actual app window or the full screen that contains it. A browser tab capture records only that tab, not other windows or the desktop. If window capture fails, try recording the whole screen.
- Keep the target visible. Do not minimize the window or switch it to another virtual desktop during the test. Some systems stop updating a window capture when the window is hidden or minimized.
- Allow screen recording on macOS. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording (the name can vary by macOS version) and allow your browser. Quit and reopen the browser after changing the permission, then start a new share.
- Check the browser's sharing permission. When the browser asks what to share, choose the correct screen, window, or tab. If you previously blocked the request, use the site controls beside the address bar to review permissions, then reload the page and try again.
- Close and reopen the app. A graphics or capture problem can clear after restarting the app and browser. Save your work first. Then select the source again and make a short test recording.
- Try changing hardware acceleration. Some apps draw their content directly through the graphics processor, which can result in a black capture. If the app has a hardware acceleration setting, turn it off temporarily, restart the app, and test again. Restore the setting if it makes the app slower or does not help.
- Check how the app is running. On Windows, a window running as an administrator may not capture correctly when the browser is running normally. Try a whole-screen capture or use the app's own recording or export option rather than changing administrator permissions broadly.
Windows 11 does not usually have a single system-wide screen recording permission switch for desktop browsers. The browser's share picker is where you choose what to share. On macOS, the screen recording privacy permission is an important system-level check.
When the black window is expected
Some video services use digital rights management, or DRM, to prevent copying movies and other protected media. A screen recorder may capture a black video area while still recording menus, subtitles, or the rest of the desktop. Changing the screen recorder or capture source does not remove that restriction, and this test is not a way to bypass it.
For protected content, use the service's supported download or sharing options. For a regular app that remains black, use its built-in export feature if available, or contact the app maker with the operating system and browser version. The Screen Recorder processes recordings in your browser, and nothing you record is uploaded.
