Why laptop function keys do not register online

Learn why laptop Fn and F keys may not appear in a browser test, which keys browsers intercept, and how to check the keyboard another way.

You press a function key in an online keyboard test, but nothing happens. Or the key changes the screen brightness instead of showing up in the test. That does not automatically mean the key is broken. A laptop, operating system, or browser may handle the key before the webpage can see it.

The Keyboard Test can show which key presses reach the browser. Use it to check ordinary keys first, then compare what happens when you press a function key by itself or with Fn.

Check the function keys online

  1. Open the Keyboard Test in your browser.
  2. Press a few letter keys and confirm that the test detects them. This confirms the page is responding to your keyboard.
  3. Press a function key that will not trigger a browser shortcut, such as F2, if your current page and browser do not assign it an action. Watch whether the key is marked in the test.
  4. Try the same key with Fn, and then try the top-row key by itself. On some laptops, the key changes brightness or volume in one mode and sends an F-key press in the other.

Avoid testing F5, F11, or F12 in the middle of a test. Depending on your browser and computer, these can reload the page, change full-screen mode, or open developer tools before the test can respond.

What the result means

The Fn key itself is not marked

This is expected. The Fn key is usually handled inside the laptop and does not send a regular key press to the browser. The laptop uses it to change what another key does, such as switching between brightness control and an F-key action. An online test cannot confirm that the Fn key itself works.

The key changes brightness or volume but is not marked

The laptop is handling that press as a system shortcut. The key may be working correctly, but the browser is not receiving a normal F-key press. Check whether your laptop has an Fn Lock setting or a setting for the top-row key behavior.

The browser responds, but the test does not mark the key

Some keys have browser or operating system shortcuts. The browser may reload the page, open a menu, or switch views instead of passing the press to the webpage. A missing mark for a shortcut key is not a reliable hardware diagnosis.

Some F keys appear and others do not

This can happen because different keys have different system or browser actions. If regular keys work and the missing F keys trigger laptop features, the keyboard is probably sending those keys to the system. If a key has no expected action and fails in other apps too, continue with the checks below.

How to fix the key behavior

  1. Check for an Fn Lock. Look for a lock symbol on the keyboard, often on Esc or one of the function keys. Some models toggle Fn Lock with Fn + Esc, but the shortcut varies. Check the laptop's manual before trying combinations.
  2. Change the top-row behavior. Windows 11 does not have one standard Settings switch for this. Look in your laptop maker's keyboard utility or in BIOS/UEFI for a setting named something like Action Keys Mode, Hotkey Mode, or Function Key Behavior. Change it only if you want the top row to act differently by default.
  3. Check the macOS function-key setting. On a Mac, open System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Function Keys. The option to use F1, F2, and other keys as standard function keys changes whether you need to hold Fn or the Globe key for the printed system controls.
  4. Test outside the browser. Try the key in an app that uses function keys, or check whether the key performs its printed laptop action. If the action works, the key is reaching the computer even if a webpage cannot observe it.
  5. Restart and check for keyboard software updates. If a key has stopped working in more than one app, restart the computer and install available keyboard or firmware updates from the laptop maker. Avoid changing BIOS/UEFI options you do not recognize.

When the keyboard may be faulty

A browser test alone cannot prove that a function key is broken, especially if that key has a system shortcut. Suspect a hardware problem if the key neither performs its printed laptop action nor works in apps that use F keys, while nearby keys work normally. If possible, connect an external keyboard and compare the same action. A key that still fails after checking Fn Lock and the laptop's settings may need keyboard repair or replacement. For a laptop under warranty, contact the manufacturer before opening the case.

Why online tests miss some key presses

A webpage only receives key events that the browser passes to it. The laptop may translate a top-row key into brightness or volume control, and the browser may reserve certain keys for its own shortcuts. The Windows key, Print Screen, and laptop shortcut keys are also commonly handled by the operating system first. For those keys, no response in a webpage does not necessarily mean the keyboard is defective.
