Why can't my browser show laptop battery data?
Learn why a browser may hide battery status, how to check whether your laptop still reports it, and what to try when the Battery Meter is missing.
Your laptop has a battery, but a browser tool or website says it cannot find one. That does not automatically mean the battery is broken. A web page can only read battery details that the browser and operating system choose to make available.
Use the Battery Meter to check what your current browser reports. If the tool is unavailable or shows only some details, the steps below can help you tell whether the limit is in the browser, the operating system, or the laptop.
Check what your browser can see
- Open the Battery Meter in the browser you are troubleshooting.
- Check whether it shows a charge level and charging state. The tool may also show time left and drain rate when the browser provides those details.
- If you cannot find or open Battery Meter, try the same page on the laptop in another up-to-date browser. The tool appears only when the browser reports a battery.
- Compare the result with your laptop's own battery information. On Windows 11, open Settings › System › Power & battery. On macOS, open System Settings › Battery.
Keep the laptop plugged in or unplug it as needed to check whether the charging state changes. A plugged-in laptop still has a battery, but the browser may show it as charging rather than discharging.
What the result means
Battery Meter shows a charge level
Your browser can read at least some battery information from the system. The battery is being detected, but the display is not a full battery health test. A charge level tells you how much charge the system estimates is available, not how much capacity the battery has lost over time.
Battery Meter is missing or unavailable
The browser did not report a battery to the tool. This can happen even when the laptop has a working battery. Some browsers do not support the feature, and others limit access to battery information. A website cannot turn on a feature that the browser does not provide.
The level appears, but time left or drain rate does not
The browser may provide the charge level without providing a useful estimate of how long it will last. Time remaining changes with screen brightness, apps, and other activity. It can also be hard to estimate when the laptop is plugged in or has been idle. A missing estimate by itself is not a sign of a fault.
The system and browser disagree
The operating system and browser may update their readings at different times, and a displayed percentage is an estimate rather than a precise measurement. Reload the page and check again after a minute. If the operating system also shows an unusual level or charging state, troubleshoot the laptop rather than the website.
How to fix it
- Check the laptop's own battery status. On Windows 11, open Settings › System › Power & battery. On macOS, open System Settings › Battery. If the system shows a charge level and charging state, the browser's missing reading is more likely a browser limitation.
- Reload the tool. Close the Battery Meter window, reload the page, and open it again. This can refresh information the browser has already made available, but it cannot add support for a missing browser feature.
- Update your browser. Install the latest version available for your operating system, then fully quit and reopen the browser. Browser support can change between versions.
- Try another browser. Open Battery Meter in a different up-to-date browser on the same laptop. If the battery appears there, the first browser is likely limiting or not supporting battery data.
- Restart the laptop. If the operating system's battery display is also stuck or missing, restart the computer and check the system settings again.
- Check for operating system updates. Install available updates if the battery is missing from the laptop's own settings. Updates can fix system reporting problems, although they cannot guarantee that every browser will expose battery details.
Battery status generally does not have a website permission switch like camera or microphone access. If the browser does not expose battery data, changing site permissions will not make the Battery Meter appear.
When the battery itself may be faulty
If Windows or macOS cannot show a battery either, or the laptop shuts down unexpectedly when unplugged, the problem may be with the battery or its connection. Check the laptop maker's built-in diagnostics if available. If the battery is swollen, stop using and charging the laptop, and arrange professional service. For a laptop under warranty, contact the manufacturer before opening the case or replacing parts.
Why browsers handle battery data differently
Browsers use a feature commonly called the Battery Status API to read details such as charge level and whether a device is charging. It is not a direct connection from a web page to the battery. The browser and operating system decide whether to provide those details, and their support differs across browsers and devices.
Battery information can also reveal a little about a device, so browsers may restrict it for privacy. A laptop's operating system can know its battery status while a particular browser keeps that information unavailable to websites. There is no web page setting that can bypass that decision.
If your operating system reports a normal battery but one browser does not, use a browser that provides the information or check the battery in the operating system's settings.
