Webcam looks too dark even in a bright room

Find out whether your webcam is actually dark or the app is causing it, then fix lighting, camera settings, permissions, or a blocked lens.

Your room looks bright, but your face is still hard to see on camera. That can happen when a window or lamp behind you is brighter than your face, when the lens is partly covered, or when an app is using a different camera or image setting.

First check the camera outside the app where you noticed the problem. The Camera Test shows a live preview, resolution, and frame rate in your browser. That helps you tell whether the dim image follows the camera or only happens in one app.

Check how dark the webcam image is

  1. Open the Camera Test. When your browser asks for camera access, choose Allow.
  2. Look at the live preview with the lighting you normally use. Check whether the whole image is dim or just your face.
  3. Move a lamp or turn your chair so light falls on your face from the front, then look at the preview again.
  4. Compare the preview with the app where you saw the problem. If the test looks clear but the call app looks dark, check that app's camera selection and video settings.

Close other video apps before comparing. Some cameras can only provide a feed to one app at a time, and another app may affect which camera is available.

What the result means

The image improves when you light your face

The camera is probably adjusting to the brightest part of the scene. A bright window behind you can make your face look dark even in a well-lit room. Put the main light in front of you, or move the camera so the bright window is not behind your head.

The whole preview stays dark

Check for a privacy shutter, lens cover, smudge, or protective film. If the lens is clear, the camera may be using a low exposure setting, or it may have a hardware or driver problem. Try the system camera settings and another app before deciding the camera is faulty.

The Camera Test looks fine, but one app is dark

The webcam can produce a usable image, so focus on the app. It may have selected a different camera, turned down brightness, enabled a filter, or applied a low-light effect. Choose the same camera you tested and reset its video adjustments if the app offers that option.

The preview is dark in every app on this device

This points to lighting, a system camera setting, a driver issue, or the camera itself. Try the fixes below, then test the webcam on another computer if you can.

How to fix a dark webcam

  1. Clear the lens. Wipe it gently with a clean microfiber cloth. Check for a physical privacy shutter, a sliding cover, tape, or protective film, especially on a new laptop.
  2. Put light in front of you. Face a window or place a lamp near the camera, pointed toward you. Avoid having a bright window or lamp directly behind you. A bright background can cause automatic exposure, the camera's adjustment to the amount of light, to make your face look darker.
  3. Check the app's video settings. Select the webcam you tested. Look for brightness, exposure, low-light correction, or video filters, and return unusual adjustments to their defaults. The names and availability vary by app.
  4. Check camera controls in Windows. On Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Cameras and select your webcam. If Windows shows controls such as brightness or contrast, adjust them and check the preview again. Some cameras and drivers do not offer these controls.
  5. Check camera access. On Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera and turn on camera access for the device and the app you use. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow access for your browser or video app. Also check the camera permission in your browser's site settings, then reload the test page.
  6. Reconnect an external webcam. Unplug it, connect it directly to another USB port, and avoid a hub while testing. For a wireless camera, check its battery and connection.
  7. Restart the app and computer. Close video-call and camera apps, then reopen the one you need. If the image stays dark everywhere, restart the computer so it can reload the camera driver.

On a phone or tablet, check that the browser has camera permission in the device's app settings. A phone's camera app may also use different image processing from a browser preview, so compare in the app where you actually need the camera.

When the webcam may be faulty

If the preview stays very dark after you clean the lens, improve the lighting, check available camera controls, and try another app, test an external webcam on the same computer or your webcam on another device. A built-in camera that remains dark on multiple devices may need repair. If the laptop is under warranty, contact the manufacturer before opening it. For an inexpensive external webcam, replacement may cost less than repair.

Why a bright room can still look dark

What matters to the camera is the light reaching the lens and the difference between the brightest and darkest parts of the frame. Your eyes can adapt to a bright room, but the camera may prioritize a bright background and reduce exposure. A small light aimed toward your face can help more than adding general light behind the camera. The Camera Test shows the live image, but it does not provide exposure or brightness controls, so use your system or video app settings for those adjustments.

The Camera Test displays a live preview and camera details in your browser. It does not record a video.
