Webcam flickers under LED office lighting: how to fix it
Find out why LED lights create webcam flicker, test whether the lighting or camera is responsible, and try practical fixes for smoother video.
Your webcam looks fine in one room, but the picture pulses or shows dark bands under the LED lights at work. The effect can be distracting in meetings, even when the lights look steady to your eyes.
Most often, the camera and the lighting are cycling at mismatched rates. Test the camera under the same lights, then compare it with daylight or a different lamp to find out which changes help.
Test the webcam under the lights
- Open the Camera Test in the room where you see the problem. Allow camera access when the browser asks.
- Keep the camera in the same position and look at the live preview. Watch for brightness pulsing, horizontal dark bands, or bands that move up or down the image.
- Without moving the camera, switch off the nearby LED lights or move into daylight. Give the preview a few seconds to adjust, then check whether the flicker stops.
- Turn the LEDs back on and try one light at a time, if possible. If the room has a dimmer, compare its brightest setting with a lower setting.
Keep your face and camera position steady during these comparisons. A webcam can change exposure automatically when the scene gets brighter or darker, so moving around makes it harder to tell whether the lighting fixed the flicker.
What the result means
The flicker stops in daylight or with the LEDs off
The lighting is the likely cause. The camera is capturing changes in the LEDs' brightness that you may not notice by eye. Test the lights individually to identify the problem fixture, dimmer, or lighting setting.
The flicker changes when you dim the lights
The LED driver or dimmer is probably involved. Many LEDs control brightness by switching rapidly on and off. At some dimmer settings, that switching interacts more noticeably with the camera. Try full brightness, or use a different light that is designed to work with the dimmer.
The flicker remains with the LEDs off
Check whether there is another flickering light source nearby, such as a monitor or another lamp. If the image still flickers in daylight, the camera's exposure settings, driver, or video app may be responsible. Test the camera in another app or on another device if available.
You see moving horizontal bands
The camera sensor reads the image a row at a time, rather than capturing every row at exactly the same instant. This is called a rolling shutter. If the light changes while the sensor is reading the image, different rows can capture different brightness levels, creating bands.
How to fix LED webcam flicker
- Use daylight or a different lamp. Move so a window lights your face, or use a lamp that does not cause bands in the Camera Test. Avoid pointing the webcam directly at a bright fixture.
- Change the dimmer setting. If the flicker is strongest at low brightness, try full brightness and reduce the light another way, such as moving it farther away. Some LED bulbs and dimmers do not work well together.
- Look for an anti-flicker setting. If your webcam's manufacturer software or video app offers a setting called anti-flicker or power-line frequency, try the local frequency, usually 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The right choice depends on the electrical supply where you are, not on your internet or camera resolution. Not every webcam exposes this control.
- Check the camera settings available in your system. On Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Cameras and see whether your camera offers brightness or exposure controls. Options vary by camera. macOS does not provide a universal anti-flicker control, so check the webcam's software or the video app instead.
- Check camera permission and selection. On Windows 11, go to Settings › Privacy & security › Camera. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera. Make sure your browser or video app is allowed to use the camera, then check that the app is using the webcam you tested.
- Update or reconnect the webcam. Install any available camera software or driver update from the computer or webcam manufacturer. For a USB webcam, try another port and connect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub.
When the camera may be faulty
If the webcam flickers under daylight and LED lighting, and the same problem appears in more than one app, test it on another computer if you can. A problem that follows the webcam points to its settings, cable, or hardware. If another camera works normally in the same room, the original webcam may need a repair or replacement. For a built-in laptop camera, contact the manufacturer or a repair shop if changing settings and updating the driver do not help.
Why office LEDs and webcams can disagree
Many power systems use alternating current at either 50 or 60 cycles per second. LED drivers often convert that power into rapid changes in light output. Depending on the driver, a lamp may pulse at 100 or 120 times per second, or use a different switching pattern, especially when dimmed.
Your eyes usually blend these quick changes into steady light. A camera records separate frames with a particular exposure time, so it can show brightness changes or bands that are invisible in the room. A webcam's browser preview may not offer control over exposure time or frame timing. If the camera has no anti-flicker option, changing the light source is often the most reliable fix.
