Webcam bubble stops updating in Screen Recorder

Find out whether a frozen webcam bubble comes from the camera, browser permission, or Screen Recorder, then follow the right fixes in order.

You start a screen recording, but the webcam bubble freezes on one frame while the rest of the screen keeps moving. Or the bubble looks live before recording, then stops updating in the saved video.

Check the camera feed separately from the recording. The Screen Recorder can record your screen with a camera, and the Camera Test can help show whether the webcam itself is still sending a live picture.

Check where the picture freezes

  1. Open the Screen Recorder on a computer. It does not work on phones.
  2. Allow camera access if your browser asks. Set the recorder to include the camera, then check whether the webcam bubble moves when you move your head or hold up a hand.
  3. Make a short test recording. Move in front of the camera for several seconds, then save the recording and play the file to see whether the bubble moves there.
  4. Open the Camera Test in another tab and allow camera access. Check whether its live preview updates while you move.

Close the Camera Test before trying to record again if the camera stops working when two tabs request it. Some devices or browsers do not let two pages use the camera at the same time.

What the result means

The bubble moves in the recording but looked frozen on screen

The camera feed is reaching the recording, but the preview in the recorder is not refreshing correctly. The recording may still be usable. Close and reopen the recorder, then make another short test before recording anything important.

The bubble is frozen in both the preview and the saved file

The camera image is not updating before it reaches the recording. A blocked permission, another app using the webcam, or a stalled camera connection can cause this. Check the camera in the Camera Test and work through the fixes below.

The Camera Test preview also freezes

The issue is likely outside the recorder. The camera may be busy, disabled, or having trouble with its connection or driver. If the preview is live in the Camera Test but frozen in the recorder, focus on browser permissions and the recorder session instead.

The bubble is black or missing

The recorder may not have camera access, or the wrong camera may be selected. Check the browser's camera permission and the camera option in the recorder. If the computer has a built-in camera and a USB webcam, disconnecting one temporarily can help identify which source is active.

How to fix it

  1. Restart the camera session. Stop the recording, close the recorder tab, then open it again. If the Camera Test is open, close that tab too. This releases a camera stream that may have stalled or stayed in use.
  2. Allow camera access in the browser. Click the site controls beside the address bar and set the camera permission to allow access. Reload the recorder page and approve the browser prompt if it appears. Every tool that uses a camera asks for permission first.
  3. Check the system camera permission. On Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera, then turn on camera access and access for desktop apps. On macOS, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow your browser. Reload the page after changing permission.
  4. Close other apps that use the webcam. Quit video meeting, camera, and recording apps, including any that remain open in the background. Then reopen the recorder. If the camera works only after another app closes, that app was holding or interrupting the camera feed.
  5. Reconnect the webcam. For a USB camera, unplug it, wait a few seconds, and connect it directly to another computer port rather than through a hub. For a built-in camera, restart the computer and check that any physical privacy shutter is open.
  6. Try another browser session. Close and reopen the browser, then test in a regular window rather than a private window. If the camera updates in another supported browser, check the original browser's site permissions and updates.

When the webcam may be faulty

If the preview freezes in the Camera Test and in other camera apps, try the webcam on another computer if you can. For an external webcam, a different cable or USB port can help rule out a connection problem. If it still freezes on another device, the camera or its cable may be damaged. Check the warranty or replace the webcam. For a built-in laptop camera that fails across apps after permission and restart checks, contact the manufacturer or a repair shop.

Why the preview and recording can differ

The webcam bubble is a camera image layered over the screen recording. The browser has to keep the camera stream updating while it also captures the screen. A frozen bubble does not automatically mean the screen capture failed, and a moving bubble before recording does not prove the saved video contains a moving picture. A short test recording checks both parts.

Keep the test clip brief and review it before recording a longer session. Recordings made with the Screen Recorder stay on your device. Nothing you record is uploaded.
