How to test a touchpad's physical click buttons

Check whether each touchpad button registers, separate a physical click fault from tap-to-click settings, and find the right fix for Windows or Mac.

You press the touchpad and nothing happens, or the left and right clicks seem unreliable. It can be hard to tell whether the physical click is failing, a setting changed, or the click is going to the wrong place.

Use the Mouse Test to check whether the touchpad sends left and right mouse clicks to your browser. It can confirm that a click registers, but it cannot measure how much force the touchpad needs or whether the button feels mechanically right.

Test the physical clicks

  1. Open the Mouse Test on the laptop with the touchpad you want to check.
  2. Move the pointer into the test area. Press and release the touchpad where you normally make a left click. Look for the left button response in the test.
  3. Try a physical right click. On a touchpad with separate buttons, press the right button. On a clickpad, press the lower-right area if that is how right-click is set up. Check whether the test registers a right click.
  4. Repeat each click several times, including near the middle and edges of the usual click area. Press and release fully each time. A click that registers only occasionally, or stays active after you release, may indicate a setting or hardware problem.
  5. If you normally tap instead of pressing, test that separately. A tap is a touch gesture, not a physical button press, so it does not confirm that the click mechanism works.

Keep the pointer over the test area while clicking. Clicking outside it can select a page control instead, which makes the result confusing. If the laptop has a separate mouse connected, move it aside so you know which device is sending the input.

What the result means

Both clicks register every time

The touchpad is sending left and right click events to the browser. If clicks still fail in one app, check that app's controls and settings. A browser test cannot prove that every program handles the input correctly, and it does not assess click force, travel, or the feel of the button.

Left click works, but right click does not

The right-click action may be assigned to a different gesture or area. On many laptops, a clickpad uses a press in the lower-right corner, while other models use a two-finger click. Check the touchpad settings and the laptop maker's instructions for the supported action.

A click registers only sometimes

First check whether you are pressing in the configured click area. A clickpad may not register a press at every point, especially near its upper edge. If the same physical spot fails repeatedly while another spot works, the touchpad may have a worn or damaged click mechanism.

The test does not register a click

Make sure the pointer is in the test area and try again. If tapping works but pressing does not, the physical click may be disabled, configured differently, or faulty. If neither tapping nor pressing works, check whether the touchpad is disabled or whether the system has stopped detecting it.

The click seems to stay pressed

Release the touchpad fully, then test again without resting your finger on it. If the button still appears held down or the page keeps selecting text, check for debris, a stuck button, or a touchpad driver problem.

How to fix a touchpad click that does not work

  1. Clean and press the intended area. Wipe the touchpad with a soft, dry cloth and make sure your finger is not damp. Try the center and the lower corners, since the click area can vary by model.
  2. Check whether the touchpad is disabled. Look for a touchpad key on the keyboard, sometimes combined with an Fn key. Laptop shortcut keys are handled by the operating system, so they do not register as ordinary browser keys.
  3. Review touchpad settings. On Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Touchpad. Check that the touchpad is enabled, and review the tap and click options. On macOS, open System Settings › Trackpad and check options such as Tap to click and Secondary click.
  4. Check whether the problem is only tap-to-click. On Windows 11, look under the touchpad's Taps options for the single-finger tap setting. On macOS, use System Settings › Trackpad to switch Tap to click on or off. Test taps and physical presses separately, because changing the tap setting does not repair a physical button.
  5. Restart the computer. A restart can restore a touchpad that stopped responding after sleep or a temporary system problem. Test the clicks again before opening other apps.
  6. Update or reinstall the touchpad driver. In Windows, check Settings › Windows Update › Advanced options › Optional updates for a touchpad driver, or use the laptop maker's support instructions. On a Mac, install available updates through System Settings › General › Software Update.

When the touchpad hardware may be faulty

If a particular click area fails repeatedly in the browser and in several apps, while tapping or an external mouse still works, the physical click mechanism may be damaged. A swollen laptop battery can also push against the touchpad and make it stiff or uneven. If the case or touchpad is bulging, stop pressing it and arrange a repair promptly.

For a laptop under warranty, contact the manufacturer before opening the case. Otherwise, a repair shop can inspect the touchpad, its cable, and the battery. If the clickpad is integrated into the laptop's top case, replacement may require changing the whole assembly.

Why a touchpad can click without moving

Some touchpads have separate physical buttons. Others use one large clickpad whose surface moves slightly when pressed. Newer models may use haptic feedback, which creates the sensation of a click with vibration instead of a moving button.

The Mouse Test sees the click event sent by the system, not the mechanism underneath. A successful result means the browser received a click. It does not confirm that the button has even resistance, that haptic feedback is working, or that the touchpad is physically undamaged.
