How to test controller stick drift in a browser

Check whether a controller stick moves when untouched, then tell real drift from a dead zone, connection issue, or browser limitation.

Your character walks or your camera turns even when you are not touching the controller. That can be stick drift, but a game’s dead zone, a connection problem, or a controller that has not been detected can look similar.

Use the Gamepad Test to watch what the controller reports when each stick is resting. This helps you check the input before changing game settings or deciding the controller needs repair.

Test the controller sticks

  1. Open the Gamepad Test on the computer you want to check. Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth and keep the browser tab active.
  2. Press a controller button once if the test does not detect it, then release the button. Some browsers only report a controller after you interact with it.
  3. Set the controller on a flat surface. Do not touch either stick, and watch the stick input shown by the test for several seconds.
  4. Move each stick slowly to its full edge in all directions, then let it go. Check whether the input returns to its resting position and stays there.
  5. Repeat the check after disconnecting and reconnecting the controller. If you have another controller, test it in the same browser as a comparison.

Test one controller at a time if you have several connected. This makes it easier to tell which device is producing the input. Avoid pushing the stick while deciding whether it has settled, since even slight pressure can move it off center.

What the result means

The stick rests at the center and stays there

The browser is receiving a centered input, so the controller is not showing obvious drift during this check. If the problem happens only in one game, look at that game’s controller selection, calibration, and dead zone settings. A dead zone is the small area around the stick’s center that a game ignores.

The stick moves while you are not touching it

The controller is reporting movement at rest. A small, brief fluctuation can happen, so let the stick settle and check again. If the position repeatedly stays away from center or moves in one direction, especially after reconnecting, drift is likely.

The stick returns to center in the test but drifts in a game

The game may use a different dead zone or controller setup. Increase the game’s dead zone slightly as a test. If that stops the unwanted movement, the game was reacting to small input near the center. A larger dead zone can hide mild drift, but it does not repair a worn stick and can make aiming less precise.

The controller does not appear in the test

The browser may not have detected it, or the controller may not be connected to the computer. Check the cable or Bluetooth connection, press a controller button while the test tab is active, and reconnect the controller before testing again.

How to fix controller stick drift

  1. Let the stick settle. Release it fully and place the controller on a level surface. If the reading changes when you take your hand away, make sure a tight grip, a case, or an object on the stick is not holding it off center.
  2. Reconnect the controller. Unplug a wired controller and try another USB port. For a wireless controller, switch it off and on, then pair it again. Test it once more in the browser and in the game.
  3. Check the game’s controller settings. Look for stick calibration and dead zone settings. Try a small dead zone increase, then check whether the game still responds accurately near the center. Restore the original setting if it does not help.
  4. Calibrate it in Windows 11. Press Windows + R, enter joy.cpl, and press Enter. Select the controller, choose Properties, open Settings, and choose Calibrate if that option is available. Follow the prompts, then retest the stick.
  5. Reconnect it in macOS. Open System Settings › Bluetooth, remove or forget the controller if that option is available, and pair it again. macOS does not provide a universal stick calibration page, so check the controller options in the game as well.
  6. Clean around the stick carefully. Turn the controller off and use a dry, soft brush to remove loose dust around the stick base. Move the stick gently through its full range. Do not pour liquid into the controller or force the stick.

When the controller needs repair

If the same stick repeatedly reports movement at rest in the browser and in more than one game, after reconnecting and checking the settings, the stick may be worn or damaged. A dead zone can reduce the symptom, but it cannot restore the stick’s original accuracy. Check the warranty before opening the controller. If it is out of warranty, compare the cost of a replacement stick or repair with the price of a replacement controller.

Why the browser test can differ from a game

The Gamepad Test reads the input the browser receives from the controller. A game can apply its own dead zone, sensitivity, or calibration after that, so a stick that looks centered in the test can still behave differently in a particular game. The browser also needs to stay open and active while you test. If the controller disappears, reconnect it and interact with it again.

A controller that drifts in several games and in the browser is more likely to have a physical problem than a game-specific setting.
