How to make a square product teaser video
Plan a 1:1 product teaser, capture clean footage, build a short story, and export a square video that stays clear on social feeds.
A product teaser needs to show the item quickly, make one benefit clear, and look good in a square frame. If you start with wide footage, important details can disappear when the editor crops it.
Use a video editor to assemble and export the finished clip. TooLab’s Screen Recorder can capture a software product or website demo, but it does not edit clips or set a square project. For a physical product, record video with a camera or phone and import those clips into your editor.
Make the square teaser
- Plan a short story. Pick one product benefit and decide what the viewer should understand by the end. For a software product, open the Screen Recorder and choose a screen, window, or tab to capture. Allow screen access in the browser prompt, then record the feature in use. For a physical item, capture a few steady clips from different angles.
- Create a square project. In your video editor, set the project or canvas aspect ratio to
1:1. If it asks for pixel dimensions, choose1080 by 1080for a clear square export. Import your footage and place it on the timeline. - Trim to the useful moments. Aim for about 15 to 20 seconds. Start with the product or its strongest result, show one or two useful details, then finish with the product name or a simple next step. Remove pauses, setup actions, and repeated shots.
- Reframe each shot. Check the square preview, not just the original clip. Move or scale the picture so the product stays visible and important details are not cut off. Use a different crop for each shot if the subject moves.
- Add only essential text and sound. Use a short label for the key benefit or product name. Keep words away from the edges, where platform controls may cover them. Add music or narration only if it supports the message, then preview the complete clip.
- Export and check the file. Choose a square output at
1080 by 1080, if your editor offers that setting, and use MP4 if it is available and suits your destination. Open the exported file and watch it from beginning to end to confirm the crop, sound, and ending are right.
Choose the right framing and ending
The product fills most of the frame
This works well when the product has a distinctive shape, label, or texture. Leave a little space around it so the edges do not feel cramped, and keep the camera steady. If a detail matters, include a closer shot rather than enlarging one frame until it becomes blurry.
The product needs context
Show it being used, then cut to a clear view of the item. A quick action can explain a feature better than a list of claims. Keep the background simple so the viewer can tell what to look at.
The video is for a software product
Capture the important action on screen, such as completing one task or revealing one feature. Hide notifications and unrelated windows before recording. In the square project, zoom or reframe the screen capture so menus and labels remain readable. A full desktop may be too small to understand once it is cropped.
The final shot has a call to action
End on one clear next step, such as visiting a product page or trying a feature. Leave it visible long enough to read, but avoid cramming several links, claims, and labels into the final frame. If the video must work without sound, make sure the main point is still clear from the images and text.
Fix common square video problems
- Reframe a cut-off product. Select the affected clip and adjust its position or scale in the editor. If moving the picture cuts off another important part, use a wider shot instead.
- Shorten a slow opening. Trim the beginning until the product or its result appears immediately. Remove empty time before the first useful action.
- Make small text easier to read. Replace long sentences with a few words, increase the text size, and keep it against a plain part of the image. Preview at the size people are likely to watch, not only at full-screen editing size.
- Check audio on the timeline. Confirm that the music or narration is not muted and that it covers the intended section. Listen to the exported file too, because a preview alone does not confirm the final sound.
- Correct a non-square export. Check both the project canvas and the export dimensions. A square project can still produce a different file shape if the export preset uses another aspect ratio.
- Capture the screen again if details are unreadable. For a software demo, close extra windows and show only the relevant area before recording. TooLab’s Screen Recorder asks you to choose what to share in the browser capture prompt. If the browser does not offer the source you need, use a different capture method and import that recording into your editor.
Keep the source footage private
TooLab’s Screen Recorder records the screen, window, or tab you choose, with optional sound, microphone, and camera. The recording stays on your device, and nothing you record is uploaded. Your video editor may handle files differently, so check its save and sharing settings before sending a project or exported clip to someone else.
