Make a short screen explainer in Edge on an office PC

Plan a clear Edge walkthrough, record a window or tab with narration, and save a concise explainer while keeping private office details out.

You need to explain a task in Edge, but a long recording can be hard to follow and may capture private office information. A short, planned walkthrough is easier to watch and share.

Use the Screen Recorder to capture a screen, window, or tab with sound and microphone narration. You can record in the browser without installing software. The recording stays on your device, nothing you record is uploaded.

Record a short Edge walkthrough

  1. Open the Screen Recorder in Edge. Before recording, decide on one task and write down the few actions a viewer needs to see. Aim for a clip of about 30 to 90 seconds.
  2. Close unrelated windows and prepare the page or document you will demonstrate. Hide private messages, customer details, account names, and notifications. If you need to show only Edge, plan to share its window or a single tab rather than the entire screen.
  3. Choose whether to capture a screen, a window, or a tab in the browser's sharing chooser. Select the Edge window or tab that contains the demonstration. The available sound choices can vary depending on what you share.
  4. If you want narration, allow microphone access when Edge asks, then speak a short opening sentence. Keep the microphone close enough to hear your voice clearly, and pause briefly between steps.
  5. Show each action at a steady pace. Move the pointer to the control you are describing, wait a moment, and then click it. When the explanation is finished, stop the recording and follow the recorder's on-screen options to save it.

Before sharing the saved clip, play it back from beginning to end. Check that the important details are legible, the narration is audible, and no private information appears in the capture.

Choose what to record

Record a tab for a browser-only task

Sharing one tab is a good choice when the steps happen on a website and you do not need to show other programs. It reduces the chance of capturing unrelated windows or desktop notifications. If the website opens a new tab during the demo, the new tab may not be included in the original capture, so keep the task in one tab when possible.

Record the Edge window for a task with browser menus

Choose the Edge window when you need to show the address bar, browser menus, or movement between tabs. This includes more of the browser around the page. Close other tabs that contain sensitive information before you begin, and avoid showing saved passwords or account menus.

Record the whole screen only when needed

A full-screen capture can show a task that moves between Edge and another application, but it can also include notifications, open files, and other windows. Use it only when the viewer needs to see those steps. Arrange the desktop first and close anything that should not appear in the video.

Add narration or computer sound

Narration helps explain why you are taking each step. Computer or tab audio is useful when a sound is part of the demonstration, but it is not necessary for a typical software walkthrough. Check the browser's sharing choices before recording, since audio options depend on the capture type and device.

How to fix recording problems

  1. Choose the right capture area. If the video shows the wrong content, stop and start again, then select the Edge tab or window you meant to share. A tab capture will not show a different application, and a window capture may not include other windows.
  2. Allow screen sharing in Edge. When the browser asks what to share, select the intended screen, window, or tab and confirm the share. If no chooser appears or capture is blocked, check with your office IT team. A managed browser policy may restrict screen sharing, and you should not bypass that policy.
  3. Check microphone permission. Click the site information icon beside Edge's address bar and check that microphone access is allowed for the recorder. On Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone and check microphone access. On macOS, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and allow Edge if it is listed.
  4. Pick the correct microphone. If your voice is missing or too quiet, select the intended microphone in the recorder if a device list is available. On Windows 11, check Settings › System › Sound › Input. On macOS, check System Settings › Sound › Input. Speak at a normal distance and check the input level before starting over.
  5. Reduce interruptions and lag. Turn on your computer's focus or do-not-disturb setting, close unnecessary tabs, and pause large downloads. If the office computer is slow, record a smaller window or tab instead of the entire screen.
  6. Ask IT about a blocked feature. On a managed office PC, screen capture, microphone access, or saving files may be limited by company settings. Share the error message with IT rather than changing security settings yourself.

Keep the recording safe to share

Screen recordings can reveal more than the task you intend to explain. A notification banner, browser profile name, open tab, or file path may expose information to coworkers or customers. Use a clean browser window, close personal and work tabs that are not part of the demo, and disable notifications for the recording period.

Save the recording to an approved work location and follow your organization's rules before sending it. If you need a longer walkthrough with more preparation, see how to record a software setup walkthrough.
