Screen recording captures the wrong tab: what to check

Find which tab, window, or screen your recorder is sharing, then fix the source or browser permissions before you record again.

You start a recording, but the video shows a different browser tab, an empty page, or your whole desktop instead of the page you wanted. This usually means the browser shared a different source than you expected, or the recorder was already set up when you changed tabs.

Use the Screen Recorder to record a browser tab, a window, or your screen. The browser asks you to choose what to share, so check that choice before recording. The steps below also help you separate a wrong video source from a sound or permission problem.

Choose and check the tab you want to record

  1. Open the Screen Recorder on a computer. Screen Recorder does not work on phones.
  2. Start a screen recording. When the browser's sharing prompt appears, choose the option for a browser tab, a window, or your entire screen, depending on what you need.
  3. Select the exact tab you want in the browser's sharing prompt. If you want to record a web page, do not select the tab that has the recorder in it.
  4. Check the preview or selected source in the browser prompt, if it shows one. Confirm the share only after the correct tab or window is selected.
  5. Return to the recorder and begin the capture. If you are recording another tab, switching back to the recorder should not change the selected source.
  6. Stop and review a short test recording before making a longer one. This confirms both the picture and any sound you need.

The exact layout and wording of the sharing prompt depend on your browser. It may group tabs, windows, and screens under separate choices. Choosing a window or the whole screen is not the same as choosing one browser tab: those options can include other apps or everything visible on the display.

What the result means

The recording shows the wrong browser page

The browser is sharing a different tab from the one you meant to capture. Stop the recording and start again, then choose the right tab in the browser's sharing prompt. Changing the page in the recorder after sharing has begun does not necessarily change the source being recorded.

The recording shows your desktop or other apps

You likely chose a screen or a window instead of a browser tab. That can be the right choice if you need to show several apps, but it can also expose notifications or other open windows. Choose a single tab for a recording focused on one web page.

The recording is blank or frozen

The selected tab may have closed, stopped responding, or no longer be the source you intended. Try sharing it again, keep it open, and make a brief test. Some protected video or app content may appear black because the browser or service restricts capture.

The picture is right, but tab audio is missing

Video source and audio are separate choices. If the browser prompt offers an option to share tab audio, enable it when you select the tab. The recorder can also use microphone audio, but that records sound through your microphone, not necessarily the audio playing inside the tab.

How to fix the wrong tab capture

  1. Stop and choose the source again. End the current recording, start a new one, and select the correct tab in the browser prompt. You cannot reliably fix a wrong source by clicking the intended tab after recording has started.
  2. Keep the target tab easy to identify. Give it a clear page title, and close duplicate tabs if several look alike. If the prompt lists multiple tabs, take a moment to check the page name before confirming.
  3. Use the right sharing type. Choose a tab for one web page, a window for one application, or a screen to show everything on a display. If you need to switch between apps in the video, choose a screen rather than a tab.
  4. Allow screen capture on your Mac. On macOS, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and allow your browser if it is listed. The exact setting name can vary by macOS version. Quit and reopen the browser after changing access.
  5. Check browser permissions and sharing support. Allow the screen-sharing request when the browser asks. If the prompt never appears or sharing fails, check that your browser supports screen sharing and that a workplace or school policy is not blocking it. See how to check browser screen-sharing support.
  6. Close other recording or sharing sessions. Stop an existing screen share or recording in another tab or app, then reload the recorder and try again. If the browser still selects the wrong source, restart it and repeat the short test.

On Windows 11, there is no general screen-capture permission switch that you need to turn on for every browser. Use the browser's own sharing prompt, and check any organization or family controls that may restrict screen sharing. If you are recording sound from a microphone, microphone access is a separate permission from screen capture.

Keep the recording focused

A tab recording is useful for showing a web page without including other windows. A screen recording is more flexible, but anything that appears on that display may be captured, including notifications. Turn on Do Not Disturb or close private windows before choosing the whole screen. If you need to show a sequence of pages, decide whether one tab is enough or whether a window or screen capture will make the steps clearer.

Screen Recorder runs in your browser, and nothing you record is uploaded.
