Remote team notifications blocked? How to fix them
Find out whether browser, operating-system, or focus settings are blocking team alerts, then restore notifications on Windows, Mac, Android, or iPhone.
You are working with a remote team, but messages arrive only when you open the chat, or you do not see an alert at all. The cause may be a blocked browser permission, an operating-system setting, a focus mode, or a notification preference inside the team app.
Check each layer in order instead of reinstalling the app. Browser Info can show browser permissions when the browser makes them available, which helps you start by checking whether the site is allowed to send notifications.
Find where the notifications stop
- Open Browser Info in the browser you use for work. Look for a Notifications permission entry and note whether it is allowed, denied, or unavailable. Browsers do not always expose every permission in a report.
- Open your team chat website in that same browser and profile. Select the site controls beside the address bar and check whether Notifications is allowed. If the browser asks again, choose Allow.
- Check the notification settings inside the team app or website. Make sure desktop alerts are enabled, the conversation is not muted, and your work status is not set to a mode that pauses alerts.
- Ask a teammate to send a test message, or use a second account if you have one. Check both while the chat tab is open and after you switch to another tab.
- Look in the operating system's notification center or notification history. A message may have arrived even if no banner appeared on screen.
Test with the browser profile you actually use for work. A permission granted in one profile does not automatically apply to another, and private browsing windows can handle permissions differently.
What the result means
The browser says notifications are blocked
The website cannot send browser alerts until its permission changes. Allow notifications for the work site in the browser's site controls, then reload the page. If the setting is locked or immediately switches back, a work policy may be controlling it.
The browser allows notifications, but no banner appears
The site has permission, but the operating system may be hiding alerts, or the browser may be set to deliver them quietly. Check the browser in your system notification settings and turn on banners or sounds if you want them. Also check Focus, Do Not Disturb, and similar modes.
Alerts appear only while the chat tab is open
The site may depend on an active browser session, or the browser may be sleeping or suspending background tabs. Keep the browser open, check its background activity settings, and ask your team's administrator whether the service supports alerts when the page is closed. A browser cannot deliver a site notification if the site or browser does not support that behavior.
Only one channel or conversation is quiet
The operating system and browser are probably working. Look for muted channels, custom notification rules, or a status such as busy or away inside the team app. A team-wide setting may also limit alerts to direct messages or mentions.
No websites can send notifications
This points to a browser-wide permission, a system-wide notification setting, or a managed-device policy. Test another site you trust, then check the browser and operating-system settings below.
How to fix blocked notifications
- Allow notifications for the work site. In Chrome, open Settings › Privacy and security › Site settings › Notifications. In Edge, open Settings › Cookies and site permissions › Notifications. In Safari on a Mac, open Safari › Settings › Websites › Notifications. Find the work site and allow it, then reload the page.
- Turn on notifications for the browser in Windows. On Windows 11, open Settings › System › Notifications. Turn notifications on and check that your browser is allowed to send notifications. If banners or sounds are off for that browser, enable the options you need.
- Allow notifications for the browser on a Mac. Open System Settings › Notifications, select your browser, and enable notifications. Check whether alerts are allowed on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, or as banners, depending on where you want to see them.
- Pause Focus or Do Not Disturb. On Windows 11, open Settings › System › Focus and check whether a focus session is active. On a Mac, open System Settings › Focus and review the active mode and its allowed apps. Turn the mode off briefly to test, or add the browser or team app to its allowed list.
- Check the team app's own alert rules. Open its notification preferences and enable desktop or browser notifications. Unmute the relevant channel or conversation and check whether a status setting is suppressing alerts. If you use a desktop app, check that app separately from the website.
- Check phone notification settings if you work from a phone. On iPhone, open Settings › Notifications, select the team's app, and allow notifications. On Android, open Settings › Notifications › App notifications and enable the team's app. Menu names can vary by Android device. For Safari web notifications on iPhone, the website generally needs to be added to the Home Screen on a supported iOS version. A team's mobile app may be a more reliable option.
- Restart the browser and sign in again. Close and reopen the browser, reload the work site, and sign in again if needed. If alerts still fail, test another browser profile or restart the computer to clear a stuck browser session.
When your work device is managed
A company or school can set browser policies that block notifications, prevent permission changes, or restrict background activity. If the notification setting is grayed out, the site keeps returning to Block, or the problem affects only your work computer, do not try to bypass the policy. Ask your IT administrator whether browser notifications are allowed for the team's site and whether a desktop or mobile app is required.
While you troubleshoot, keep the work app open and use a separate calendar reminder for time-sensitive meetings or handoffs.
