Remote job interview audio: how to test your mic
Check whether your interview microphone captures clear speech, then separate mic, permission, headset and call-app problems before the interview starts.
Your voice may sound clear in your room but distant or muffled to an interviewer. Or your headset microphone may work in one app and fail in another. A quick check before the call can help you tell whether the problem is the microphone, a setting, or the interview app.
The Microphone Test shows whether your browser receives your voice and lets you make a short recording to play back. It checks the microphone on this device, not the entire call path, so use it first to isolate the input side.
Test your interview microphone
- Open the Microphone Test and choose the microphone you plan to use from the device list. If you will wear a headset, connect it before choosing.
- Press Start microphone. Allow microphone access when your browser asks. Speak at your normal interview distance and volume, as if answering a question.
- Watch the signal meter and waveform. The status should change from Waiting for sound to Sound detected when you speak.
- Press Record 5 seconds, say a complete sentence, then play it back. Listen for words that are too quiet, muffled, distorted, or cut off.
- If the test offers a different microphone in the device list, select it and repeat the same sentence. Keep the better option selected for your interview app too.
Use a sentence with a few soft sounds, such as “Please send the updated schedule,” and a couple of louder words. That gives you a better check than a single clap. Keep your usual posture and headset position, and avoid changing several settings between recordings.
What the result means
The meter moves and the recording sounds clear
The microphone is capturing your voice in the browser. If the interviewer still cannot hear you, or says your voice sounds different, check which input the interview app selected. The app may be using a laptop microphone instead of the headset, even when the browser test used the headset.
The meter barely moves, or your voice sounds distant
The microphone is receiving a low level, or it may be too far away. Move a headset boom closer to the corner of your mouth without placing it directly in front of your breath. For a built-in microphone, speak toward the computer and check the input level in system settings.
The meter moves, but the recording sounds rough or cuts off
Sound reaches the browser, but the input may be too loud, the microphone may be obstructed, or audio processing may be changing your voice. Try another position and compare the test with Noise suppression, Echo cancellation, and Auto volume switched on and off. These settings can affect how the browser captures speech, but your interview app may process audio differently.
The status stays on Waiting for sound
The selected input is not sending detectable speech to the test. You may have chosen the wrong device, muted the microphone, or denied permission. If the test reports No microphone was found…, the browser cannot see an available input. If it says The microphone is being used by another app…, close the other app and try again.
The test sounds fine, but the call is still unclear
A local recording does not include the interview app's microphone choice, call processing, or network connection. If your recording sounds clear but the call does not, check the app's input selection and settings, then try a brief test call with someone you trust. If only the live call breaks up, the issue may be in the app or connection rather than the microphone itself.
How to fix interview audio
- Check the mute switch. Look for a button on the headset cable, headset earcup, or microphone boom. Some headsets mute when you raise the boom. Also check the mute control in the interview app.
- Choose the same microphone in the app. Open the app's audio or device settings and select the headset or microphone that sounded clear in the test. Do not assume the app switches inputs automatically when you plug in a headset.
- Allow microphone access. In your browser, open the site information or permissions control beside the address bar and set Microphone to allow access, then reload the test. On Windows 11, check Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone and enable microphone access for desktop apps. On macOS, check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and allow your browser or interview app.
- Check the system input level. On Windows 11, open Settings › System › Sound, select your microphone under Input, and check its volume. On macOS, open System Settings › Sound › Input, choose the intended microphone, and check the input level.
- Close other apps that may be using the microphone. Quit other meeting, recording, or voice chat apps, then test again. If the test reports that another app is using the microphone, close that app fully, including any app that remains open in the background.
- Reconnect or reposition the headset. Unplug a wired headset and connect it firmly, or reconnect a Bluetooth headset. On a phone, check Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone on iPhone, or the interview app's microphone permission under Settings › Apps on Android. Menu names can vary by Android device.
- Restart the browser or device. If the microphone stopped or was disconnected, reconnect it and reload the page. Restart the computer or phone if the input remains unavailable after reconnecting.
Why the interview can sound different
The test's recording helps you hear what the browser received, but the interviewer hears audio after the interview app processes it and sends it over the connection. Noise suppression can reduce steady background sounds, but it may also soften quiet words. Automatic volume control can change how loud you sound from one phrase to another. Bluetooth headsets can also switch audio modes when their microphone is active, which may make playback sound less full. Focus on whether your words are understandable, not whether the call sounds exactly like a studio recording.
The five-second recording stays on your device. Nothing you record in the test is uploaded.
