How to record a product demo for a client

Record a clear product demo for a client with your screen, voice, and optional camera. Prepare the app, capture the right view, and check the file.

A client needs to see how your product works, but a live walkthrough is hard to schedule or repeat. A short screen recording lets them watch the key steps in order, with your explanation alongside the interface.

You can record a screen, window, or browser tab with the Screen Recorder. Use the steps below to prepare a clean demo, capture the right view, and check the recording before you send it.

Record the product demo

  1. Open the Screen Recorder on a computer. It does not work on phones. Decide what the client needs to see, then open the product and arrange the relevant window before recording.
  2. Choose whether to capture your screen, a window, or a browser tab. Select the smallest view that shows the whole demonstration. A tab or window can help keep unrelated apps and notifications out of the video.
  3. Enable microphone audio if you plan to narrate. Allow the browser to use the microphone when it asks. You can also include a camera if seeing you will make the explanation clearer.
  4. Start the recording, then move through the demo at a steady pace. Explain the purpose of each step, pause briefly after important changes, and avoid rushing through menus or results.
  5. Stop when you have shown the main task and its outcome. Review the recording, check that the screen and voice are clear, then save the file using the recorder's available save or download option.

Keep the demo focused. For a short client introduction, show one useful task from start to finish rather than trying to cover every feature. If the walkthrough needs several topics, record separate short clips so the client can find each one easily.

Choose what to capture

Record a browser tab for a web product

Choose a tab when the product runs in a browser and the demo does not need to show other parts of your computer. This keeps the recording focused on the product. If the client needs to hear sounds from the tab, choose the browser's option to share tab audio when it appears. Audio-sharing options can vary by browser and operating system.

Record a window for a desktop app

Choose the app window when you are demonstrating installed software. This can keep the desktop and other open windows out of view. Check that menus, dialog boxes, and tooltips are included when you need them, since some pop-ups may appear outside the selected window.

Record the whole screen for a multi-app workflow

Capture the full screen if the demo moves between the product and another app, such as a spreadsheet or a browser. Close personal windows first and move any sensitive content off-screen. The screen-sharing picker asks you to choose what to share, so confirm the selected screen before you begin.

Add narration or camera only when it helps

Your voice can explain why a step matters, while a camera view can make a presentation feel more personal. Neither is required. If you use narration, keep your microphone close enough to hear clearly and speak at a consistent distance. A camera can take attention away from small interface details, so leave it out if the product needs to remain the focus.

Fix common recording problems

  1. Allow screen sharing in the browser. When the browser's sharing picker opens, select the screen, window, or tab you intend to show and confirm the share. If you dismissed the prompt, start the capture again from the recorder.
  2. Allow microphone access. Check the permission icon beside the browser address bar and allow microphone access for the page. On Windows 11, check Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone and enable microphone access for apps and desktop apps. On a Mac, check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and allow your browser.
  3. Allow screen recording on a Mac. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and allow the browser if it is listed. The setting name can differ on older macOS versions. Close and reopen the browser if macOS asks you to restart it after changing permission.
  4. Check the sound source. If the recording has no narration, confirm that the correct microphone is selected and that it is not muted. On Windows 11, open Settings › System › Sound and check the input device and level. On a Mac, open System Settings › Sound › Input and check the selected microphone and input level.
  5. Make another short test recording. Record a few seconds and play it back before repeating the full walkthrough. If you cannot hear app audio, check whether the browser's sharing picker offered an audio-sharing option for the selected tab or screen.
  6. Reduce interruptions. Turn on Do Not Disturb or close apps that may show notifications over the demo. If the recording stutters, close heavy tabs or apps and make a shorter test before recording again.

Keep client information out of the demo

Use sample accounts and test data whenever possible. Before recording, check for customer names, email addresses, private messages, account numbers, internal notes, and browser tabs you do not intend to show. If you must demonstrate a real account, get permission and limit the recording to the information the client needs.

Review the full clip before sharing it, including the beginning and end. Confirm that no notification, sign-in detail, or unrelated window appeared while you were recording. Screen Recorder runs in your browser, and recordings stay on your device. Nothing you record is uploaded.
