How to keep private notifications out of recordings

Keep private alerts out of screen recordings by choosing the right capture area, silencing notifications, and checking the saved clip before sharing.

A message banner can appear in the middle of a screen recording, showing a name, message preview, or appointment you meant to keep private. Even a quick pop-up can be saved in the finished clip.

Before you record, choose what the capture includes and silence alerts. TooLab's Screen Recorder can capture a screen, window, or browser tab. It works on computers, not phones.

Record without showing private alerts

  1. Open the Screen Recorder and start a recording. When the browser's sharing prompt appears, choose a tab or window if that contains everything you need. Avoid sharing the entire screen unless necessary.
  2. Turn on Do Not Disturb or the equivalent focus mode before you start. This helps prevent banners from appearing while you record.
  3. Close private messages, email, calendar, and other apps you do not need. If you are recording a browser tab, close other tabs with private information too.
  4. Make a short test recording. Trigger a harmless notification if you can, then check whether it appears in the captured video.
  5. Record the full clip, then review it before sharing. Check the beginning and end as well as the main content, since alerts can arrive at any point.

Choosing a smaller capture area can reduce what is included, but it is not a substitute for silencing alerts. Some operating systems may show notifications over an app window, and behavior can vary by browser and device.

What the capture choice means

The entire screen

This captures the broadest area. Notifications, desktop pop-ups, and anything you switch to may be visible. Use it only when you need to show several apps or the whole desktop, and turn off notifications first.

A window

A window capture can keep other desktop content out of the recording. It may still show an alert that appears over that window, depending on your operating system and browser. Test it before recording anything sensitive.

A browser tab

A tab capture is usually the narrowest choice for a website walkthrough. It avoids showing the rest of your desktop, but it can still include private information displayed in that tab, such as account details or messages.

How to stop alerts from appearing

  1. Turn on Do Not Disturb. In Windows 11, open Settings › System › Notifications and turn on Do not disturb. On macOS, open System Settings › Focus › Do Not Disturb. On an iPhone, use Settings › Focus › Do Not Disturb. Android menu names vary, but look under Settings › Notifications › Do Not Disturb.
  2. Hide message previews. On a Mac, open System Settings › Notifications › Show previews and choose When Unlocked or Never. In Windows 11, open Settings › System › Notifications and turn off notification banners for apps that could reveal private details. You can turn these settings back on after recording.
  3. Clear alerts already on screen. Dismiss existing banners and close any notification panel before you begin. Focus modes silence many incoming alerts, but do not necessarily remove notifications that are already visible.
  4. Close private apps and pages. Quit messaging or email apps you do not need, and close sensitive documents and browser tabs. This also reduces the chance that a notification reveals private information in its preview.
  5. Choose the smallest useful capture area. Share one tab or window when possible. If you need to show the full desktop, put private windows away and check which display you selected in the browser's sharing prompt.
  6. Review the saved recording before sending it. Watch the clip locally and look for banners, names, message previews, and account details. If an alert is visible, make a new recording with notifications silenced rather than sharing the exposed clip.

If a private notification is already in the recording

Do not share the clip until you have checked the exposed detail. The safest option is usually to record that part again after turning on Do Not Disturb and clearing existing alerts. If you have already shared the file, remove access or delete the shared copy where possible, then let the recipient know if the information was sensitive.

Screen Recorder runs in your browser, and the recording stays on your device. Nothing you record is uploaded.
