How to prepare your webcam for a remote job interview
Check your camera, framing, lighting, and permissions before a remote job interview, then fix common problems that can leave the video dark or unavailable.
A webcam that looks fine in a casual call can be too dark, poorly framed, or unavailable when your interview starts. A few minutes of testing beforehand can help you catch the problem while there is still time to fix it.
Use the Camera Test to check the live picture, resolution, and frame rate in your browser. Then prepare the camera position and lighting, and confirm that the interview app can access the camera too.
Test and set up your webcam
- Open the Camera Test on the same computer and in the same browser you plan to use for the interview.
- When the browser asks for camera access, allow it. If you have more than one camera, choose the one you plan to use for the interview.
- Look at the live preview. Check that your face is in focus, the picture is bright enough, and the camera is not pointed too high or low. Move the laptop or webcam rather than leaning toward the camera.
- Check the resolution and frame rate shown by the test. Move naturally and turn your head a little to see whether the picture stays steady.
- Adjust your lighting and camera position, then check the preview again. Close the test when you are done and open your interview app to confirm its own camera preview.
For a comfortable frame, position the camera close to eye level and leave a little space above your head. Keep your face near the center of the picture. Sit far enough away that your head and shoulders are visible, but not so far that your face looks small.
What the camera test results mean
The preview is clear and steady
The camera is producing a usable picture in the browser. This does not guarantee that the interview app is using the same camera or settings, so check the app's preview separately before the interview begins.
The picture is dark, bright, or backlit
The camera is working, but the light is making your face hard to see. If a bright window or lamp is behind you, the camera may expose for that light and leave your face in shadow. Put the main light in front of you or slightly to one side, and avoid pointing the camera directly at a window.
The picture freezes or looks choppy
The camera feed may be competing with other apps or the computer may be busy. Close video calls and camera apps you are not using, and try the preview again. A browser test can show camera behavior, but it cannot predict exactly how an interview platform will handle video during a call.
No picture appears
The browser may not have permission, the camera may be covered or disabled, or another app may be using it. Check the browser's site permission and your system's camera privacy settings before assuming the webcam is broken.
Fix common webcam problems
- Open the shutter and clean the lens. Check for a physical privacy cover, a camera key, or a switch on the webcam. Wipe the lens gently with a clean microfiber cloth. Avoid touching it during the interview.
- Allow camera access in your browser. Select the site controls icon beside the address bar and set Camera to allow access for the test or interview site. Reload the page if the browser asks you to do so. Every site that uses the camera needs permission.
- Allow camera access in your computer settings. On Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera and enable camera access and access for desktop apps. On macOS, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow the browser or interview app you are using.
- Choose the right camera in the interview app. Open the app's audio and video settings and select the webcam you tested. If the app shows a preview, confirm that it is the same image and framing you saw in the browser.
- Close other camera apps and reconnect the webcam. Quit other meeting, recording, or camera apps. For a USB webcam, unplug it and reconnect it directly to another USB port. If it is built in, restart the browser and test again.
- Check camera permission on a phone. If you are interviewing on a phone, open the phone's privacy settings and allow camera access for the browser or interview app. On iPhone, look under Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera. On Android, look under Settings › Apps › [browser or interview app] › Permissions › Camera. The exact labels can vary by phone.
Prepare the room and camera position
Face a window or put a lamp behind the screen, slightly above eye level. Light from behind you can turn your face into a silhouette, while a lamp directly above can make strong shadows. If the picture looks washed out, move away from the bright source or reduce its intensity.
Place the laptop on a stable surface and raise it with a stand or a few sturdy books if the camera looks up at your chin. Do not balance it on anything that can wobble. If you use an external webcam, attach it securely near the top of the monitor and point it toward your face.
Keep the background simple and remove anything distracting from the camera's view. Check that the camera is not aimed at a doorway or a bright screen. Put your notes near the screen so you can glance at them without looking far away from the camera.
Test the interview app's preview on the same network and device you will use for the call. A camera test checks the local picture, not whether your internet connection will stay stable. If you will join from a laptop, keep it plugged in and place it where the Wi-Fi connection is reliable.
When the webcam may be faulty
If the camera does not appear in the browser or interview app after you check the shutter, permissions, and camera selection, restart the computer and test again. For an external webcam, try it in another USB port or on another computer. If it still produces no picture, or the cable cuts out when moved, the webcam or cable may need repair or replacement. If a built-in camera fails across different apps after permissions are allowed, contact the computer maker or a repair shop.
Close the Camera Test before your interview, then reopen the interview app's preview a few minutes before the scheduled time.
