Phone says charging but battery barely rises? Fix it
Find out whether your charger, cable, heat, or phone use is slowing charging, and compare charge rates safely with a browser-based test.
Your phone shows the charging icon, but the battery percentage barely moves. That can happen when the phone is using power as fast as it receives it, or when the adapter, cable, port, or battery is limiting the charge.
Start by comparing how quickly the phone charges under consistent conditions. The Charger & Cable Test measures charging speed in percent per minute when your phone's browser reports battery data.
Compare the charging rate
- Open the Charger & Cable Test on the phone while it is plugged in.
- Keep the phone connected to the charger and let the reading settle. Note the charging rate shown in percent per minute.
- Repeat with a different cable, then with a different adapter or wall outlet. Change one item at a time so you can tell which change matters.
- For a fair comparison, start each check at a similar battery level, keep the screen off, and close demanding apps. Avoid comparing a nearly full battery with a low one.
Do not rely on one short reading. Battery percentages are rounded, and charging speed naturally changes as the battery fills. If the browser does not show a rate, use the phone's own percentage display and compare the change over the same length of time.
What the result means
The rate improves with another cable or adapter
The part you replaced is likely limiting the charge. A worn cable, loose connector, low-power adapter, or incompatible charging combination can show a charging symbol while delivering little power. Use the better-performing combination and recheck it during normal use.
The rate is low with every charger
The phone may be warm, busy, or limiting charging through a setting. It could also have debris or damage in its charging port, or a battery that has degraded. Try the fixes below before arranging a repair.
The rate changes when the screen is off
Apps or features may be using much of the incoming power. Video, games, navigation, a hotspot, and high screen brightness can all increase power use. If charging improves while the phone is idle, the charger may be working, but it may not have enough spare capacity to charge quickly during heavy use.
The reading is unavailable or jumps around
Some phone browsers do not provide battery information, and small percentage changes can make a short test look erratic. Check the phone's own battery display and compare longer intervals under the same conditions. A browser test is a comparison aid, not a precise electrical measurement.
How to fix slow charging
- Stop demanding tasks while charging. Close games, video apps, navigation, and hotspot use, then turn off the screen for 15 to 20 minutes. If the percentage starts rising more steadily, power use was offsetting the charge.
- Plug into a wall outlet. A computer USB port, car port, or unpowered hub may provide less power than a suitable wall adapter. Try a known working outlet and connect the adapter directly, not through a hub or extension accessory.
- Try another compatible cable and adapter. Check that the cable fits firmly at both ends and is not frayed, bent, or unusually warm. Use a charger and cable that support your phone's charging standard. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee fast charging.
- Check the charging port carefully. Look for lint, moisture, corrosion, or a connector that moves when plugged in. Do not put metal tools or liquids in the port. If you see moisture, disconnect the cable and let the phone dry according to its manufacturer's guidance.
- Let the phone cool down. Remove it from direct sun and pause games or video recording. Charging can slow when the phone is too hot or too cold. Do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer to cool it.
- Review battery charging settings. On Android, open Settings › Battery and look for settings named Battery protection, Charging optimization, or similar. On iPhone, open Settings › Battery and check Battery Health & Charging or Charging, depending on your iOS version. Optimized charging or a charge limit can pause or slow charging near the set limit.
- Restart the phone and check for updates. A temporary software problem can affect charging status. Restart the phone, install available system updates, and test again before contacting support.
When it may be a hardware problem
If several known-good chargers and cables all charge slowly, test while the phone is cool and idle. If the cable connects only at an angle, charging repeatedly starts and stops, or the port looks damaged, stop forcing the connector and arrange service. A loose or damaged port needs inspection rather than repeated cable wiggling.
Check the battery health information in your phone's settings if available. A service warning, unexpected shutdowns, or a battery that drains quickly when unplugged are reasons to contact the phone maker or a repair shop. If the phone or battery is swollen, unusually hot, or smells odd, unplug it if safe and stop using it until it has been inspected.
Why charging slows near full
Phones usually reduce charging power as the battery gets close to full. This helps manage heat and battery wear, so a slow rise near 80 or 90 percent does not by itself prove the charger is faulty. Compare chargers at similar battery levels, and avoid judging a cable from a brief test while the phone is almost full.
