How to check phone camera browser permissions

Check whether your phone browser can access the camera, what each permission result means, and how to restore access without changing unrelated settings.

Your camera may work in the phone’s Camera app but show a black screen on a website. That can happen because your browser has its own permission for the site, separate from the phone’s camera permission.

Use the Camera Test to check whether the browser can show a live preview and report camera details. Then use the results to decide whether to change a site setting, a phone setting, or neither.

Check the camera permission in your browser

  1. Open the Camera Test in the phone browser you want to check. Use the same browser where the camera is failing.
  2. When the browser asks to use the camera, choose the option that allows access. The wording varies by browser. If you do not see a prompt, continue to the next step.
  3. Look at the live preview and the camera details, including resolution and frame rate. Move the phone slightly to confirm that the picture updates.
  4. While the test page is open, open the browser’s site controls from the address bar or page menu. Check whether Camera is set to allow, ask, or block for this site. The exact control depends on the browser.

A permission applies to a website in a particular browser. Allowing the camera in one browser does not automatically allow it in another, and allowing camera access for one site does not grant it to every site.

What the result means

The preview appears and updates

The browser can access a camera right now. If another website or calling app still shows a black screen, check that app’s camera selection and site permission. The working preview does not prove that every camera feature or video format will work in every app.

The browser asks, but the preview stays blank

You may have allowed the site in the browser while the phone still blocks camera access for the browser app. Check the phone’s camera permission for that browser, then reload the test page. Also close other apps that are actively using the camera.

No permission prompt appears

The site may already have a saved choice, or the browser may be blocked at the phone level. Look at the site’s Camera setting in the browser. If it says blocked, change it to ask or allow and reload the page.

The preview works, but the reported resolution or frame rate is low

The browser is reporting the camera stream it can provide to this page, not a guaranteed maximum for the camera. Lighting, browser limits, the selected camera, and the phone’s current workload can affect the stream. A lower figure alone does not show that the camera is damaged.

The browser says it cannot find a camera

Check the browser’s system permission and any camera privacy control on the phone. If other camera apps also cannot use the camera, the problem may be with the phone or its operating system rather than this website.

How to restore camera access

  1. Allow camera access for the site. In Android Chrome, open the site’s controls from the address bar, then check Permissions or Site settings and allow Camera. You can also look in Chrome › Settings › Site settings › Camera. Menu names can vary between browser versions.
  2. Check the browser’s phone permission. On Android, open Settings › Apps › Chrome › Permissions › Camera and allow access while using the app. Replace Chrome with the name of your browser if you use another one. On iPhone, check Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and enable the browser if it appears there. For Safari, also check Settings › Apps › Safari › Camera; on older iOS versions, look under Settings › Safari › Camera. Available controls vary by iOS version.
  3. Reload the test page. After changing a permission, return to the page and reload it. If the browser still shows the old result, close the tab and open the test again.
  4. Check for a phone-wide camera block. Some Android phones have a Camera access control in Quick Settings or Privacy settings. Turn it on if it is off. Also check that a physical camera cover is not closed, if your phone has one.
  5. Close other camera apps. End video calls and close camera or recording apps, then try the test again. If another app is still using the camera, the browser may not be able to start its preview.
  6. Restart the browser, then the phone. If permission is allowed but the preview remains blank, close the browser completely and reopen it. Restart the phone if that does not help.
  7. Check desktop settings only if you are testing on a computer. In Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera and enable camera access for apps. On macOS, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow the browser. Reload the page after changing access.

Browser permission is not a camera quality check

A successful permission test confirms that the browser can receive a camera stream at that moment. It does not check autofocus accuracy, image quality in every lighting condition, or whether another app has a separate camera problem. If the preview works here but fails elsewhere, check that other site or app’s permission and camera choice.

The Camera Test shows a live preview and camera details. Close the page when you are finished, or remove the site’s camera permission if you do not want it to ask again later.
