Local file export does nothing? What to check

If clicking Export creates no file or save prompt, check browser download settings, permissions, and file-saving support before blaming the app.

You click Export, but no file appears and no save window opens. The cause could be a download that started quietly, a browser setting, or an export feature the browser cannot use.

Work through these checks to find where the process stops. Browser Info can show your browser version, engine, and supported features, which helps when comparing browsers or checking a file-saving feature.

Check what happens after you click Export

  1. Open Browser Info. Note the browser version and engine. If the app uses a file picker rather than a regular download, look in supported features for a related file access feature. You can read more about that API in how to check File System Access API support.
  2. Return to the app and try exporting one small, simple file. Finish any editing first, then click Export once and wait a few seconds. Repeated clicks can create duplicate downloads or confuse a save dialog.
  3. Open your browser’s Downloads list. Look for a recent file, a paused item, or a warning that the browser blocked it. A download can start without opening a separate save window.
  4. If a file appears in the list, open the download location shown there. Check the Downloads folder and any other folder you chose for browser downloads.
  5. Try the same export in another up-to-date browser. If it works there, the first browser’s settings, extensions, or feature support are likely involved. If it fails in both, the app or the item being exported may be the cause.

What the result means

A file appears in Downloads, but you did not see a prompt

The export worked. Your browser probably saved the file automatically to its default folder. Find the folder in the browser’s download details, then change the download location or ask the browser to prompt you next time.

The browser shows a blocked or paused download

The export reached the browser, but it did not finish. Read the warning in the download list and use the browser’s available option to resume or keep the file if you trust the app and expected the download. If the app is trying to create several files, the browser may be blocking automatic downloads.

Nothing appears in the download list

The browser may not have received a download request. The export action could be blocked by an extension, depend on a feature your browser does not support, or have failed inside the app. Testing in another browser helps separate these causes.

A file picker opened, but saving did not finish

A picker means the app reached the browser’s save step. Choose a simple destination such as Downloads, use a short filename, and check that the drive has free space. If the picker closes without saving, try a different destination or browser.

How to fix it

  1. Check the browser’s Downloads list. Open the browser menu and select Downloads. If a file is blocked, paused, or waiting for confirmation, follow the prompt there. Do not assume the export failed just because a dialog did not appear.
  2. Check the save location and available space. In Chrome or Edge, open Settings › Downloads. In Firefox, open Settings › General › Files and Applications. On macOS Safari, open Safari › Settings › General › File download location. On Windows 11, open the Downloads folder in File Explorer. On macOS, open Downloads in Finder.
  3. Choose a straightforward destination. Set the location to Downloads and avoid a disconnected external drive, a network folder, or a folder that requires extra access. If a save picker appears, give the file a simple name and choose a folder you can write to.
  4. Allow multiple downloads only when needed. Some apps export several files in one action. In Chrome, check Settings › Privacy and security › Site settings › Additional permissions › Automatic downloads. In Edge, check Settings › Cookies and site permissions › Automatic downloads. Allow the site only if you trust it and expect multiple files. A single ordinary download usually does not need this permission.
  5. Turn off extensions for a test. Privacy, security, and download-management extensions can interrupt a save action. Try a fresh browser profile or temporarily disable extensions, then repeat the export. Restore your usual settings afterward.
  6. Update or change browsers. Use the latest version available for your device and retry. Browser Info can help you compare versions and supported features. If the app uses a browser file picker, support can vary; a missing File System Access API feature does not necessarily prevent ordinary downloads.

Why an export may need a particular browser feature

Web apps can save files in different ways. A regular download usually sends a file to the browser’s Downloads folder, sometimes without showing a picker. A file picker lets you choose where to save, but it relies on browser support and must be opened in a way the browser allows. These are separate processes, so a browser that can download files may still lack a specific save-picker feature.

Browsers also limit downloads started without a clear click from you. If an export takes time to prepare, the app may lose the direct connection between your click and the later save request. Try clicking the export control again after the file is ready, and check the browser’s Downloads list before repeating the whole process.

If the export fails in two current browsers and nothing appears in either download list, the app may not be producing a file. Save your work, reload the page, and try exporting a smaller item before contacting the app’s support team.
