Keyboard language switching for gaming: tips

Set up keyboard language switching for gaming, test key inputs, avoid shortcut conflicts, and fix symbols or controls that change when you switch layouts.

You switch keyboard languages to type in more than one language, then a game starts using different symbols or your familiar controls stop working. Often the keyboard is fine: the active layout has changed, or the game handles key positions differently from the operating system.

Check the keys first, then choose a consistent layout and verify your controls in the game. The Keyboard Test checks whether keys register and how many can work at once.

Test your keyboard after switching languages

  1. Open the Keyboard Test and press the keys you use for movement, actions, and shortcuts. Check that each one registers.
  2. Switch to the layout you plan to use. In Windows, Windows + Space cycles through installed layouts. On a Mac, choose an input source from the menu bar if it is visible, or use the input source shortcut set in Keyboard settings.
  3. Press the same keys in the test again. If you need to check the characters they produce, use a plain text field and compare the result with the key labels and your intended language.
  4. Test key combinations you use in the game, such as movement plus a modifier key. The test can show whether several keys register together, but some system shortcuts are intercepted before a browser receives them.
  5. Open the game and check the controls in a safe menu or practice area. Confirm that the expected actions happen, not just that the keyboard registers input in the browser.

What the test results mean

Every key registers in the test, but the game uses the wrong action

The keyboard is sending input, so check the active layout and the game's key bindings. Some games bind controls to the character a key produces, while others use the key's physical position. That difference can make the same key behave differently after a layout switch.

A key registers, but produces a different symbol

This usually points to a layout change rather than a broken key. Layouts assign different characters to the same physical keys, especially punctuation and symbols. Check the active language or keyboard indicator before changing game controls.

A key does not register in the test

Try the key more than once, then test it in a second browser or a basic text field. If it fails in several places, check for a stuck key, a connection problem, or a keyboard fault. Note that Fn, the Windows key, Print Screen, and laptop brightness or volume shortcuts may be handled by the operating system instead of reaching the browser.

Single keys work, but a combination does not

The combination may exceed the keyboard's rollover limit, which is the number of keys it can report at the same time. It may also contain a shortcut reserved by the operating system. Try a different combination in the game or test the keyboard's supported simultaneous input with the Keyboard Test.

How to fix language switching in games

  1. Set the layout before launching the game. Choose the layout you want, then reopen the game if its controls still reflect the previous one. Some games read the active layout only when they start.
  2. Remove layouts you do not use. On Windows 11, open Settings › Time & language › Language & region, select the language, then open Language options to review its keyboards. On macOS, open System Settings › Keyboard, then use Text Input to edit your input sources. Fewer choices make accidental switches less likely.
  3. Check the active input source indicator. Windows shows the current language or layout in the taskbar. On a Mac, enable the input menu from the Keyboard settings if you want to see the active source in the menu bar. Switch back before testing if it changed unexpectedly.
  4. Change the game's key bindings if needed. If the game supports custom controls, assign actions to keys that are easy to reach and consistent with your chosen layout. Check the binding in the game itself after switching languages. Menu names vary by game, so look for its controls or keyboard settings.
  5. Change a conflicting system shortcut. On Windows 11, check Settings › Time & language › Typing › Advanced keyboard settings for input language options. On macOS, check System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Input Sources. If a shortcut switches layouts while you play, choose another shortcut or avoid pressing it during gameplay.
  6. Reconnect or try another keyboard. For a wireless keyboard, check its battery and receiver. For a USB keyboard, try another port. If the same key fails across browsers and apps but another keyboard works, the original keyboard may need cleaning, repair, or replacement.

Physical keys and typed characters are not the same

A keyboard layout determines which character a key produces, while a game may respond to either that character or the key's physical position. For example, moving between layouts can change where a punctuation mark appears without moving the key itself. If a game offers both preset layouts and custom bindings, select the preset that matches the layout you actually use, then check each important action in play.

A browser test can confirm that the browser receives ordinary key events, but it cannot prove how a particular game handles them or test keys intercepted by the operating system.
