iPad microphone fades at the end of sentences
Check whether your iPad microphone is fading or an app is cutting off quiet words. Test the input, then adjust permissions and audio settings.
Your voice starts clearly, then gets softer or disappears on the last word of a sentence. This can come from the iPad microphone, a case covering an opening, or audio processing in the app you are using.
Test the microphone outside your calling or recording app first. The Microphone Test shows the input level and waveform and lets you record a short sample, so you can tell whether the fade is already present in the browser.
Test the microphone on your iPad
- Open the Microphone Test in your iPad browser and tap Start microphone. Allow microphone access when the browser asks.
- Speak a few sentences at your normal distance and volume. Keep your position steady, and watch whether the signal meter falls as each sentence ends.
- Tap Record 5 seconds, speak a sentence, and play it back. Listen for a gradual fade, a sudden cut, or a final word that is simply quieter than the rest.
- Turn off Noise suppression and Auto volume, one at a time, then repeat the same sentence. These options can change how quiet sounds are handled.
- If the test offers a microphone list, try another listed input, such as a connected headset microphone. Keep the same speaking distance for each comparison.
Testing in a browser will not reproduce every effect used by a calling app. It does help separate a microphone or permission problem from processing inside that app.
What the result means
The recording fades in the browser too
If the waveform and playback both get quieter at the end of your sentence, the effect is reaching the browser. A blocked microphone opening, a microphone mode, or automatic processing may be responsible. Try the fixes below before deciding that the microphone is damaged.
The level stays steady, but the call app fades
The microphone is sending a steady signal to the test. Check the call or recording app for options such as automatic gain, noise reduction, voice focus, or voice isolation. App names and controls vary, so temporarily disable one processing option at a time and make another short test.
The last word cuts off sharply
A sharp cutoff is different from a gradual drop in volume. Noise suppression may be treating a quiet ending as background noise, or the app may close its audio gate too quickly. Repeat the test with Noise suppression off. If the browser recording is clear but the app recording cuts off, focus on that app's audio settings.
The meter barely moves or shows Waiting for sound
The browser is receiving little or no sound. Check that microphone access is allowed, that the right input is selected if a list is available, and that the iPad case is not covering a microphone opening. A moving meter and Sound detected show that sound is reaching the browser, but listening to the recording is the better check for a fade.
How to fix fading at sentence ends
- Move the case and reposition the iPad. Remove the case temporarily and repeat the recording. iPad microphone openings vary by model, so keep your mouth a comfortable distance away and avoid covering the edges with your hand.
- Check microphone permissions. On iPad, open Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and allow access for the browser or app. For Safari, also check Settings › Apps › Safari › Microphone if that option appears on your version of iPadOS. In Safari, you can also open the page menu, choose Website Settings, and check Microphone.
- Check the microphone mode during a call. If Mic Mode appears in Control Center while the app is using the microphone, try Standard instead of a voice-isolation mode. Make a short recording after changing it, then restore your preferred setting if it does not help.
- Turn off audio processing for one test. In the app, disable automatic gain, noise reduction, or voice isolation temporarily. In the Microphone Test, compare results with Noise suppression and Auto volume off. Change one option at a time so you can identify what affects the ending.
- Close other apps using the microphone. End other calls or recordings, close those apps, and reopen the browser or app you want to test. Then try the same short sentence again.
- Compare with another recording app or browser. If the browser test sounds steady but one app fades, its processing or settings are the likely cause. If several apps record the same fade, the iPad position, case, or microphone hardware is more likely involved.
- Restart and update the iPad. Restart the device, then check Settings › General › Software Update. Retest before making further changes.
If you test the same microphone on a computer, Windows 11 has input controls at Settings › System › Sound › Input and permission controls at Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone. On a Mac, check System Settings › Sound › Input and System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.
When the microphone may need repair
Test without the case, then record in more than one app. If every recording fades or cuts out in the same way, and an external headset microphone records normally, the iPad's built-in microphone or its opening may be damaged or obstructed. Do not push a pin or liquid into the opening. If gentle cleaning around the exterior does not help, contact Apple or a qualified repair shop, especially if the iPad is still under warranty.
Why a quiet ending can disappear
Noise suppression tries to distinguish speech from steady background sound. A quiet final syllable may look like noise, especially if you trail off or pause between words. Automatic volume control can also change the level as you speak. Finish the last word at a steady volume, and compare a sample with processing on and off. The Microphone Test recording stays on your device, and nothing you record is uploaded.
