What to inspect after a printhead replacement

Check print quality, ink flow, alignment, and cartridge seating after replacing a printhead, before deciding whether to clean or reinstall it.

You replaced a printhead, but the first pages still have streaks, missing colors, or fuzzy text. Some issues clear after the printer finishes its setup, while others point to a cartridge that is not seated correctly or a problem elsewhere in the printer.

Print one clear reference page before running repeated cleaning cycles. The Printer Test Page includes color blocks, gray steps, lines, and text, so you can see which parts of the output need attention.

Print a page to inspect

  1. Open the Printer Test Page and use your browser's print command to print it. Select the printer with the replaced printhead, and confirm the paper size and orientation match the paper loaded in the tray.
  2. Use ordinary paper and a standard print quality setting for the first check. If the printer offers a choice between color and black-and-white, choose color so you can inspect all the color blocks.
  3. Wait for the page to finish printing, then let the ink dry before handling or comparing colors. Do not start another cleaning cycle while the printer is still doing a setup or maintenance task.
  4. Look at the color blocks, gray steps, fine lines, and small text in good light. Check whether colors are missing, lines have gaps, gray areas look tinted, or text has fuzzy edges or doubled outlines.
  5. If the page looks wrong, print one more copy after checking the printer's display or software for an unfinished setup message. Keep both pages so you can tell whether the problem is changing.

The pattern is a visual check, not a measurement of the printhead itself. The printer driver, paper, ink, and print settings can also affect what you see, so use the same paper and settings for each comparison.

What the result means

All colors print, and the lines and text look clean

The replacement is probably installed and working well enough for normal printing. If photos or documents still look different from the screen, check the paper type and print quality in the printer settings. A test page cannot guarantee that every color will match your display.

One or more color blocks are blank or have repeated gaps

Ink may not be reaching the nozzles, the printhead may not be seated properly, or a protective cover may still be in place. A nozzle is the tiny opening that puts ink on the paper. Check the printer's setup instructions before removing or reseating anything, because the design differs by model.

Colors are present but look streaky or uneven

A little unevenness after installation can come from air in the ink path or a head that needs alignment. If the printer has just asked you to align the printhead, follow its instructions first. If gaps persist, use the printer's maintenance utility once, then print another reference page.

Gray looks tinted, or colors seem shifted

This can happen when a color is missing, the printhead alignment is off, or the selected paper and color settings do not match the paper in the tray. Check for missing sections in the color blocks before changing color adjustments. If the blocks are complete, run the printer's alignment procedure and compare again.

Text is fuzzy, doubled, or has horizontal bands

Misalignment can make edges look doubled, while banding can point to uneven ink delivery or a print setting that is too fast for the paper. Try the printer's alignment procedure. If the defect remains in the same place on several pages, inspect the head installation and follow the manufacturer's maintenance guidance.

How to fix the problem

  1. Finish the printer's setup. Some models need time to charge the ink system, initialize the new part, or complete an alignment. Check the printer screen or its software for a prompt, and do not unplug the printer during a maintenance cycle.
  2. Check the installation instructions. Turn the printer off if the instructions say to do so, then inspect the replacement part for protective tape, a shipping cover, or packaging that must be removed. Do not touch the ink nozzles or electrical contacts, since oils or scratches can cause print defects.
  3. Confirm the part is seated and compatible. If your model uses a replaceable cartridge that includes the printhead, remove and reinstall it only as directed by the printer's manual. Check that it is the right part for your model and that the latch closes normally. Do not force the carriage or cartridge into place.
  4. Check ink and paper choices. Make sure the correct cartridges or ink tanks are installed and have ink, and that the paper is loaded correctly. In Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners and select your printer to find its available preferences. On macOS, open System Settings › Printers & Scanners, select the printer, and check the available options.
  5. Run alignment before repeated cleaning. Use the printer's own setup software or control panel to find its printhead alignment procedure. Follow the on-screen directions, then print a fresh test page. Alignment corrects where the printer places ink; it does not clear a blocked nozzle.
  6. Use a cleaning cycle sparingly. If the printer offers a nozzle check or printhead cleaning, follow its instructions and print another check afterward. Cleaning uses ink, and repeated cycles can waste a lot of it. If the same gaps remain after the recommended procedure, stop and check the model's service guidance.

When the printer or replacement needs service

If the same color is still absent after you have checked the installation, ink supply, and recommended maintenance, the replacement may be faulty or incompatible. A printer with a permanent printhead can also have a clogged ink path, damaged contacts, or another internal fault. Contact the manufacturer or the seller while the part or printer is under warranty. Avoid dismantling a permanent printhead unless the service instructions for your model specifically allow it.

If the defect changes between pages, or the printer reports an error, note the exact message and the steps you have already tried before contacting support. A clear printed pattern gives them more useful information than a description such as “the colors look off.”
