Gamepad stick response changes after PC sleep
Compare your gamepad stick before and after PC sleep, spot drift or a connection problem, and follow practical steps to restore a steady center.
Your character moves even when you are not touching the stick, or the stick feels less responsive around the center after your PC wakes. Before changing game settings, check whether the controller is reporting movement or whether one game is interpreting the input differently.
The Gamepad Test shows stick input in your browser. Compare the stick while the PC is awake and again after sleep, then use the results to narrow down the cause.
Compare the stick before and after sleep
- Open the Gamepad Test while the controller is connected. If it is not detected, press a button on the controller and check again.
- Leave the stick untouched and watch its input for several seconds. Note whether it stays centered, drifts, or jumps around.
- Move the stick slowly in a circle, let it go, then repeat the test with the other stick. This gives you a reference before sleep.
- Put the PC to sleep, wait about 30 seconds, and wake it without disconnecting the controller. Return to the test and repeat the same movements.
- If the stick response has changed, disconnect and reconnect the controller, then test again. For a browser test, refresh the page if the controller does not appear after reconnecting.
Keep the same controller, port or wireless connection, and browser for both checks. If possible, close the game before testing so that its input settings do not affect what you see.
What the result means
The stick stays centered in the test, but moves in one game
The controller is sending a stable center value in the browser. The game may have a small or disabled deadzone, which is the area around the center where slight stick movement is ignored. Check that game's controller and deadzone settings. If the problem began only after sleep, fully close and reopen the game, then compare again.
The stick drifts both before and after sleep
The issue is probably not caused by sleep alone. A small, steady off-center reading can be ordinary stick drift, while repeated jumps or a large offset can point to wear or a calibration problem. Check the same controller on another device if available. For a longer comparison of center behavior, see how to check a gamepad's center position over time.
The stick is steady before sleep but not after waking
The change is linked to resuming the connection or the controller state. A wireless connection may have resumed poorly, or the game or system may not have refreshed its input after sleep. Reconnecting the controller is a useful first check. If that restores the center, focus on the connection, port, or software resume behavior rather than replacing the stick immediately.
The controller is missing after waking
The browser is not receiving the controller at that moment. This can happen if a USB connection did not resume, Bluetooth disconnected, or the browser needs a fresh interaction to recognize the gamepad. Reconnect it, press a controller button, and reload the test if needed.
How to fix it
- Reconnect the controller. Unplug a wired controller, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. For Bluetooth, turn the controller off and on. On Windows 11, check Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Devices. On macOS, check System Settings › Bluetooth.
- Try another USB port or cable. Connect directly to the PC rather than through a hub, and test a known data-capable cable. A cable that only charges the controller may not carry its input.
- Check the game's deadzone. If the browser test shows a centered stick but the game does not, increase the affected stick's inner deadzone a little at a time. Avoid making it so large that small intentional movements stop registering.
- Restart the game. Some games do not reacquire controller input cleanly after the computer sleeps. Save your progress, close the game completely, reopen it, and test the stick again.
- Restart the PC. A restart can clear a stuck controller connection or input state. Test the controller after the restart, then repeat the sleep and wake comparison.
- Check for controller or system updates. Use the controller maker's supported update method and install relevant operating-system updates. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which step helped.
When the stick may be faulty
If the same stick drifts or jumps in the Gamepad Test before and after sleep, and it behaves the same way on another computer, the controller itself is a stronger suspect. A worn analog stick can fail to return to its electrical center even when it looks centered physically. If the controller is under warranty, contact the seller or manufacturer before opening it. Otherwise, compare the cost of a repair with a replacement controller.
Why the center reading can be slightly different
An analog stick does not always report exactly the same center value on every sample. Tiny fluctuations are different from a visible, repeated movement that would move a character in a game. Game deadzones hide small offsets, but a large deadzone can also make aiming feel sluggish near the center.
A browser test checks the input the browser receives, not every part of a game or its controller software. If the test remains steady but a game still behaves differently after sleep, compare that game's settings and restart it before treating the controller as damaged.
