Gamepad input mapping: what to check before buying

Check a new gamepad's buttons, sticks, triggers and vibration before you buy, then learn what the browser test can and cannot tell you.

A gamepad can connect successfully and still feel wrong in the games you play. The buttons might be labeled differently, a stick may not move smoothly, or a game may assign actions in a way you did not expect.

Before buying, check how the controller is detected and whether each physical control registers. The Gamepad Test can help you check buttons, sticks, triggers and vibration in your browser. It cannot guarantee that a particular game supports the controller or uses the same mapping.

Check the gamepad before buying

  1. Open the Gamepad Test on the computer or device you plan to use. Connect the controller with USB or Bluetooth. If the browser does not show it yet, press a button or move a stick to wake the connection.
  2. Press each face button, shoulder button, trigger, D-pad direction and stick click one at a time. Confirm that each action registers, and note if the test groups or numbers inputs differently from the labels on the controller.
  3. Move each stick slowly around its full range, then release it. Check that the indicator follows your hand smoothly and returns close to its resting position.
  4. Press each trigger gradually rather than only squeezing it all the way. Check whether the input changes smoothly and whether the left and right triggers respond independently.
  5. If vibration matters to you, use the test's vibration function at a comfortable level. Confirm that the controller vibrates, and check that it feels even rather than rattly or intermittent.

If you are shopping in person, ask whether you can connect and test the controller before purchasing. If that is not possible, check the return policy and confirm that the model supports your platform, connection type and the games you want to play.

What the result means

Every control registers once

The controller is communicating with the browser, and its main inputs appear to be detected. This is a useful first check, but it does not prove that a game will use the same button assignments. A game can choose its own controls, and some controllers need a supported connection mode or a system-level profile.

A button is missing or appears to activate with another control

Check that you pressed one control at a time and that another button is not held down. Some controllers report inputs in a different order from their printed labels. If the same physical control repeatedly fails or triggers another input on a second connection, treat that as a possible defect.

A stick moves unevenly or does not return to center

Small changes near the resting point can be normal, but a stick that moves noticeably without being touched may have drift. Repeat the check after reconnecting. For game-specific dead zones or sensitivity, use the game's controller settings. A browser check cannot set those values for every game.

The test works, but a game shows the wrong prompts

The browser has confirmed that it can receive controller input, not that the game uses the controller's preferred layout. The game may show prompts for a different button style or use a different control profile. Check the game's control settings and whether it offers button remapping or alternate prompts.

Nothing appears

The controller may not be connected, may need a button press before the browser detects it, or may not be supported by the browser's gamepad features. Test the connection again, then check the manufacturer's compatibility details for your operating system and games.

How to fix a mapping or connection problem

  1. Check the game's control settings. Open the game's controls or controller menu and look for a layout choice, remapping option or reset-to-default control. Names and options vary by game.
  2. Compare the physical labels with the on-screen prompts. Face-button labels and their positions vary between controller styles. If the game offers alternate button prompts, choose the style that matches your controller. For help with a game that assigns controls incorrectly, see controller buttons mapped wrong.
  3. Reconnect the controller. On Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Devices to check its connection, then reconnect it. On macOS, open System Settings › Bluetooth. On a phone or tablet, open Settings › Bluetooth and reconnect the controller there.
  4. Try the other connection method. If the controller supports both USB and Bluetooth, test each one. A cable may provide a more reliable connection, but check that it supports data, not charging only.
  5. Close other games and controller tools. Another running game or utility may apply a profile or keep the controller busy. Close it, reconnect the gamepad, and test again.
  6. Check platform and game compatibility. Confirm support for the exact console, computer, operating system and game. A controller that works in a browser is not automatically compatible with every game.

When the gamepad may be faulty

One missed input is not enough to prove a defect. Reconnect the controller, test it again, and try a second supported connection method or device if available. If the same button fails repeatedly, a stick registers movement while untouched, or a trigger has a dead area in the test and in supported games, document the result and contact the seller before the return period ends. For a new purchase, an exchange is usually a better next step than trying to repair it yourself.

What input mapping can and cannot tell you

Input mapping is the link between a physical control and an action in a game, such as assigning a button to jump. The Gamepad Test checks whether browser-accessible inputs are being reported. It does not change a game's controls, confirm how that game labels the buttons, or test every feature a controller might offer.

For a buying decision, prioritize the controls you use most, a comfortable grip, compatible connection options, and a clear return policy. Then check the specific games you care about for remapping and button prompt options.
