Why a font appears in Windows but not in an app
Find out why an installed font is missing from one app, how to confirm Windows can see it, and the steps that usually make it appear.
You can see a font in Windows, but it is missing from the font list in a program you need. This often happens because the app has not refreshed its font list, the font was installed for a different Windows account, or the app uses a different font name.
First check whether the font is visible outside the app. The Installed Fonts tool shows fonts available to your computer and lets you preview your own text. Use it in Chrome or Edge on a computer for the full version.
Check whether Windows and the app can see the font
- Open the Installed Fonts tool in Chrome or Edge on your computer.
- Find the font in the list. Compare the family name shown there with the name you expect. A font file's name can differ from the family name that apps display.
- Preview a few letters or words you need, including any accented characters or symbols that are missing in the app.
- Close the app completely, then reopen it and check its font list again. Some apps only read the installed font list when they start.
If the font still does not appear, check Windows directly. Open Settings › Personalization › Fonts and search for the family name. This separates a font installation problem from an app-specific problem.
What the result means
The font appears in Installed Fonts and in Windows Settings
Windows and the browser can see the font, so the font is probably installed. The app may still need to restart, may display a different family or style name, or may not support that font format. Try the fixes below before reinstalling it.
The font appears in Windows Settings but not in the tool
Reload the tool and check that you are using Chrome or Edge on a computer. Other browsers may show a reduced list or no list. If the font remains missing from the tool, restart the browser and check again. The browser view is a useful check, but it does not prove that every app will list the font in the same way.
The font does not appear in Windows Settings or the tool
Windows may not have installed the font, or it may be installed under another user account. The file may also be damaged or may not be a font file that Windows can install. Check the original download and install the font again.
The font appears in the app, but its letters look wrong
The app may be using a different style in the same family, or the font may not include the characters you need. Select the intended style, such as Regular, Bold, or Italic, and test the specific text. If only certain letters are missing, choose a font that includes those characters.
How to make the font appear in the app
- Restart the app. Save your work and quit the app, including any background window it leaves open. Reopen it and check the font list. Closing only the document may not refresh the list.
- Search by the family name. In Windows 11, open Settings › Personalization › Fonts and search for the font. In the app, look for that family name rather than the downloaded file name. Also check whether the app puts styles such as Bold or Light under the family instead of listing them separately.
- Install the font again. Find the original
.ttfor.otffile in File Explorer, right-click it, and choose Install. Then restart the app. You can also open Settings › Personalization › Fonts and drag the font file into the font settings page. - Install it for all users if needed. If other Windows accounts can see the font but yours cannot, or the app runs under another account, right-click the font file and choose Install for all users. You may need to approve an administrator prompt. Then reopen the app.
- Check the app's font support. Some apps do not list every font format or every font style. If the font is a variable font, try a static Regular or Bold version if one is available. If you downloaded a font family with several files, install the styles you need rather than just one file.
- Restart Windows if the list stays stale. A full restart can refresh font information that an app or Windows session has kept in memory. After restarting, check Windows Settings and the app again.
If you are checking the same issue on a Mac, use Font Book to see whether the font is installed for your account or the computer. The Windows Settings path above does not apply to macOS.
Why one app can behave differently
Apps do not all update their font lists at the same time. A word processor might refresh only after you quit and reopen it, while a graphics program may keep a font cache until Windows restarts. Some apps also filter their lists by font type or show a family name that is different from the file name.
Windows showing a font is a good sign, but it cannot guarantee that a particular app supports it. If the font works in other programs and stays missing in just one app after a restart, check that app's font support or update it. If Windows cannot see the font either, reinstalling a valid copy is the next step.
