External webcam not detected? How to fix it

Find out why your external webcam is missing, check whether your browser can use it, and work through USB, permission, and app settings.

You plug in an external webcam, but it does not appear in a video call or the camera app. The cause may be as simple as a USB connection or permission setting, so check whether the browser can open the camera before changing more settings.

The Camera Test shows a live preview, resolution, and frame rate. It can help you separate a browser or app problem from a camera that the computer does not recognize.

Check whether the webcam is detected

  1. Open the Camera Test in a current desktop browser.
  2. When the browser asks for camera access, choose Allow. Every tool that uses a camera asks permission first.
  3. Look for a live image and camera details such as resolution and frame rate. If you see yourself, the browser can access a camera.
  4. If there is no preview, unplug the webcam, connect it directly to another USB port, then reload the test and allow access again if asked.
  5. Close other apps that may be using a camera, such as a video meeting app, and try the test once more.

If you have a built-in camera as well as an external one, a preview by itself does not prove which camera is active. Cover the built-in camera briefly or unplug the external one and see whether the preview changes or stops. This can help identify which device the browser opened.

What the result means

The preview works

The browser can use a camera, and at least one camera is responding. If your external webcam is still missing in a specific app, that app may be selecting the built-in camera, may lack permission, or may need to be restarted after the webcam was connected.

The preview appears only after reconnecting

The camera may not have initialized when you first plugged it in. A loose connector, a busy USB hub, or an app that started before the camera was connected can cause this. Keep testing with the webcam connected directly to the computer.

No preview appears

This does not prove that the webcam is broken. The browser may be blocked by a permission setting, another app may be using the camera, or the computer may not recognize the USB device. Work through the checks below in order.

The test shows a picture, but the resolution or frame rate is lower than expected

The camera is working, but the browser may be using a basic camera mode or a low-bandwidth USB connection. Try a different USB port and close apps that use video. A browser test cannot guarantee that another app will receive the same camera mode.

How to fix it

  1. Reconnect the webcam directly. Unplug it, wait a few seconds, then connect it to a USB port on the computer instead of a hub, monitor, or dock. If it has a detachable cable, check both ends and try a known data-capable cable.
  2. Try another USB port. A port can provide power without making a reliable data connection. If the camera works from another port, inspect the original port or hub. Avoid testing through an adapter until the webcam works directly.
  3. Check the camera's physical controls. Remove any lens cover and check for a privacy shutter or hardware switch. Some webcams also have a cable control that disables the camera.
  4. Allow camera access in the browser. Open the camera or site permissions from the icon beside the browser address bar, set Camera to Allow, and reload the page. If access was blocked earlier, change the saved permission before testing again.
  5. Allow camera access in the operating system. In Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera. Turn on Camera access and, if needed, Let desktop apps access your camera. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow your browser or video app.
  6. Check whether Windows lists the camera. Open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Cameras, if that page is available, and check whether the webcam is disabled. You can also open Device Manager and look under Cameras or Imaging devices. If the device has a warning symbol, disconnect and reconnect it, then restart the computer.
  7. Quit other camera apps completely. Close meeting, recording, and camera apps, including any that remain in the system tray or menu bar. Then reload the browser test. Some camera drivers or apps do not let two programs use the camera at once.
  8. Select the external camera in the app. In the video app's camera settings, choose the webcam by its name rather than the built-in camera. If you connected it after opening the app, quit and reopen the app so it checks for devices again.
  9. Restart and test on another computer. Restarting can clear a stalled USB connection or driver. If the webcam remains absent, connect it to another computer. If it is not recognized there either, the cable or camera may be faulty.

When the webcam may be faulty

If the webcam fails to appear on two computers, after trying more than one USB port and cable, the camera or its cable may have failed. Check the manufacturer's warranty before opening the camera or trying an improvised repair. If the webcam is inexpensive and out of warranty, replacement may cost less than repair.

If the camera works on another computer, the webcam is probably functional. The original computer may have a damaged USB port, a driver problem, or a privacy setting that blocks camera access. A repair shop or your computer manufacturer's support team can help if the port also fails with other USB devices.

Why a webcam can be missing from one app

A camera can be connected and still be unavailable to one particular app. The operating system controls which programs may access it, the browser keeps its own site permission, and the app may remember a different camera selection. Check all three layers rather than assuming the webcam itself has stopped working.

The Camera Test runs in your browser, so a successful preview confirms browser access, not that every installed app is configured correctly.
