Edge screen recording has no sound? Fix it
Find why an Edge screen recording has no sound, check tab audio, microphone access and Windows settings, then make a short test clip.
Your screen recording looks right, but the saved video is silent. The sound may be missing because Edge did not capture the right source, the tab or app was muted, or the microphone was not allowed.
Use the Screen Recorder to make a short test and check whether you need tab or computer audio, your microphone, or both. The recorder can capture a screen, window, or tab with sound, a microphone, and a camera.
Make a short test recording
- Open the Screen Recorder in Edge. Choose what to record: a browser tab, a window, or the whole screen.
- When Edge opens its sharing chooser, select the source that contains the sound you want. For sound from a website, try selecting that browser tab. For a desktop app, select its window or the full screen if available.
- Enable sound in the recorder if you want audio from the selected source. If you also need your voice, enable the microphone and allow Edge to use it when asked.
- Record about 10 seconds. Play sound in the tab or app, and speak if you enabled the microphone. Stop the recording and play the file back.
Keep the test short, especially on a work computer. If you plan to record a meeting, another person, or company information, follow your workplace's recording rules first.
What the result means
The tab sound is recorded, but your voice is missing
Edge captured audio from the selected tab, but the microphone was not included or did not provide input. Check the microphone selection and permission, then make another test with a few spoken words.
Your voice is recorded, but the tab or app is silent
The microphone works, but the sound from the selected source was not captured. Check that sound is enabled in the recorder and that the tab or app is playing audio. A browser tab is usually the clearest choice for recording audio from a website. Capturing sound from a separate window or the whole desktop can depend on Edge, Windows, and the capture source.
Both sources are silent
Check the saved file in another player and turn up its playback volume. If it is silent there too, repeat the test with a browser tab playing audio and the microphone enabled. If that test is silent as well, check Edge permissions and Windows sound settings below.
The sound is present but very quiet or distorted
Check the volume of the source app and the Windows output volume. For voice, move closer to the microphone and check its input level in Windows. A recording can also sound distorted if the source volume or microphone level is too high.
How to fix it
- Confirm that the source is making sound. Play the sound before recording and check that the tab or app is not muted. On Windows 11, open Settings › System › Sound › Volume mixer and check the app's volume and output device. On a Mac, open System Settings › Sound › Output and select the output device you are listening to.
- Select the sound source again. In Edge's sharing chooser, select the tab that is playing the audio when recording a website. If you choose a window or the full screen, sound capture may not be available for that source. Stop and start a new recording after changing the selection.
- Check the recorder's audio options. Make sure sound is enabled for the selected source. Turn on the microphone separately if you want narration. The microphone and tab or computer sound are different inputs, so enabling one does not automatically include the other.
- Allow microphone access for narration. In Edge, select the site information icon beside the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, then reload the page and try again. In Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone and turn on microphone access and access for desktop apps. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and allow Microsoft Edge.
- Choose the correct microphone and output. On Windows 11, open Settings › System › Sound, select the right device under Input and Output, and check that neither is muted. On a Mac, open System Settings › Sound and choose the intended devices under Input and Output.
- Close other apps using audio or the microphone. Quit meeting, recording, or voice-chat apps and make another short test. Some devices or apps can change audio routing when a call starts, so check the selected input and output again afterward.
- Restart Edge, then check with your IT team. Close all Edge windows and reopen the browser. On a managed office PC, company policies may restrict screen capture or audio access. If the same test still fails, ask IT whether recording permissions are limited before changing managed settings.
Why a tab is a useful first test
A browser tab is a specific sound source, such as a video playing in Edge. Recording a tab can make it easier to tell whether the issue is with the website's audio or with desktop capture. A window or full-screen recording may involve different capture support, so a successful tab test does not prove that every app's sound can be recorded.
Also check the saved video rather than relying only on what you heard while recording. Monitoring sound through speakers or headphones is separate from including that sound in the recording.
Keep the test private
The Screen Recorder runs in your browser, and recordings stay on your device. Before sharing a file from an office PC, check for private notifications, account details, or confidential information in the captured screen.
