How to inspect duplex printing registration
Check whether the front and back of a duplex print line up, measure any offset, and find the printer settings most likely to fix it.
Does the back of a printed page look shifted, tilted, or upside down compared with the front? Duplex registration is how accurately a printer places the second side in relation to the first. A simple two-sided test can show whether the issue is alignment, paper handling, or a print setting.
Use the Printer Test Page to print a pattern with lines, text, color blocks, and gray steps. Comparing the same pattern on both sides makes it easier to spot a shift and decide what to check next.
Print and inspect both sides
- Open the Printer Test Page and print its test pattern on the printer you want to check.
- In the print dialog, select the correct printer, paper size, and page orientation. Choose two-sided or duplex printing, and select the flip edge that matches how you intend to turn the page.
- Use plain, flat paper from the same pack you normally print on. Check that the paper guides in the tray touch the edges without bending the sheet.
- Print one copy at the normal page size. If the dialog offers scaling, use 100% or actual size, and avoid options such as fit to page for this comparison.
- Look at both sides under even light. Hold the sheet up to a bright window or light source to compare where lines and other marks fall relative to the paper edges.
- Measure the distance from a printed line or mark to the nearest paper edge on each side. Note whether the difference is left to right, top to bottom, or a change in angle.
For a manual duplex printer, printing the second side requires you to turn and reinsert the sheet. That handling can add a placement difference, so repeat the test once and reload the paper carefully before deciding the printer is out of alignment.
What the result means
The two sides line up closely
If the printed marks fall in about the same positions relative to the sheet, the printer's front-to-back registration is likely adequate for ordinary documents. A small difference may be normal, especially with plain paper. Check the final result with the paper and settings you use for important jobs.
The whole back side is shifted
If the marks on the second side are consistently farther from one edge, the printer is placing that side off center. Check the paper size, tray guides, and scaling first. If those are correct, look for a duplex alignment or registration adjustment in the printer's own settings or maintenance utility.
The back side is tilted or skewed
If one end of a line is closer to the edge than the other, the sheet may be entering the duplex path at an angle. This can happen when paper is curled, the tray guides are loose, or a feed roller is slipping. Repeat with a fresh, flat sheet before changing alignment settings.
The back is upside down
An upside-down second side usually points to the selected flip edge, not a registration fault. Long-edge and short-edge duplex options turn the page in different directions. Try the other option and print a new test sheet to see which orientation matches your document.
Only some marks look different
If the positions match but colors, gray steps, or line quality differ, the issue may be print quality rather than registration. Check the printer's ink or toner, paper type, and quality settings. A registration test cannot establish whether the printer's colors are perfectly accurate.
How to fix a registration problem
- Confirm the paper size and orientation. Make sure the document, print dialog, and printer tray all use the same size, such as Letter or A4. A mismatch can change the printed margins or scale.
- Reload flat paper and adjust the guides. Remove curled or damp sheets, fan the stack, and move the guides until they rest against the paper edges without squeezing them. Load the stack in the tray's marked direction.
- Check duplex and scaling options. In the print dialog, verify two-sided printing and the intended flip edge. Turn off fit-to-page or shrink-to-printable-area options for the comparison. Windows 11 users can check Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners, select the printer, and open its printing preferences. On macOS, open System Settings › Printers & Scanners to select the printer, then choose File › Print in the document or browser to review the available layout and paper options.
- Run the printer's duplex adjustment. Some models provide a duplex alignment, registration, or paper-feed adjustment in their printer menu or maintenance software. Follow that model's instructions, since the name and procedure differ. A regular printhead alignment is not necessarily a fix for front-to-back placement.
- Test another tray or paper type. If your printer has another tray, print the same test from it. If the shift changes, the original tray or paper feed may be contributing. Choose the correct paper type in the print settings, since thick paper can follow a different path.
- Ask for service if the shift remains. If repeated tests show the same large offset or skew with flat paper and correct settings, check the printer manual or contact the manufacturer. A worn roller or duplex-path problem may need service or a replacement part.
Registration is not the same as page alignment
Duplex registration compares the placement of the second side with the first. It does not guarantee that the printed page is centered on the sheet, nor does it check whether text or images in the document are positioned correctly. If both sides are shifted by the same amount, inspect the document layout, margins, and printer's printable area. If the front is correctly placed but the back is not, focus on duplex settings and the printer's second-side feed.
Keep the test sheet and your measurements if you need to compare results after changing settings or when contacting printer support.
