Detachable tablet keyboard ghosting: how to test

Test a detachable tablet keyboard for missed game key combinations, separate keyboard limits from game settings, and find the next fix to try.

You hold movement keys while jumping or sprinting, but one action stops registering. It can feel like keyboard ghosting, though the cause may be a limit on how many keys the keyboard can report at once, a loose connection, or a game setting.

Test the same key combinations outside the game with the Keyboard Test. This helps you tell whether the detachable keyboard is missing input, or whether the problem happens only in the game.

Test the combinations that fail in the game

  1. Open the Keyboard Test on the tablet and keep the test page active. If the browser asks you to focus the page, click the test area first.
  2. Press each key involved in the game one at a time. For example, check W, A, Shift and Space separately. Note any key that does not register by itself.
  3. Press and hold the same keys together, as you would during play. Look for every key's input in the test and note whether one disappears or an extra key appears.
  4. Try the combinations that actually cause trouble, then check the tool's simultaneous-key result. If your tablet keyboard is attached through contacts, repeat the check after removing and reattaching it.

Use the same hand position and press the keys at the same time. A slow sequence of separate presses does not test whether the keyboard can report several held keys together. For more background on key combinations, see Split keyboard ghosting while gaming: how to test.

What the result means

Each key works alone, but a combination loses a key

The keyboard may have a rollover limit. Rollover is the number of keys a keyboard can report at the same time. Some keyboards cannot register every combination, especially when several keys in one area are held together. Try a different binding or a different finger combination, then repeat the test.

An extra key appears that you did not press

This is closer to keyboard ghosting: the keyboard reports an unintended key when certain keys are pressed together. The result may depend on the exact combination, so compare the game combination with other combinations using the same number of keys.

A key fails even when pressed by itself

This is not a rollover limit. The key may be blocked by dirt, a damaged switch, a connection problem, or a setting. Test that key several times, and try another browser to see whether the input problem is limited to one page.

The test works, but the game still misses input

The keyboard can send the combination to the browser. Check the game's controls, key bindings and input mode. The game may use a different action for that key, or another program may be intercepting the input.

How to fix missed key combinations

  1. Try a different key binding. Move one action to a key outside the combination that fails. Test the new combination in the game, not just in the browser. This is a useful workaround if the keyboard has a fixed rollover limit.
  2. Reattach the keyboard carefully. If it connects through a hinge or contact strip, detach it and check that the connectors are clean and dry. Reattach it evenly, without forcing the connector, then test the same keys again. For a Bluetooth keyboard, check that it is connected and charged.
  3. Check keyboard accessibility settings. On Windows 11, open Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard and check whether Sticky keys or Filter keys is enabled. On macOS, open System Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard and check Sticky Keys and Slow Keys. On iPadOS, check Settings › Accessibility › Keyboards for keyboard accessibility options. These features change how some key presses are handled.
  4. Check the game's controls. Open its controls or key-binding settings and confirm the affected action is assigned to the key you are pressing. Temporarily remove conflicting shortcuts or overlays, then test in a practice area or menu that accepts keyboard input.
  5. Restart and update the tablet. A restart can clear a temporary input problem. Install available operating system and keyboard firmware updates from the tablet maker. If the issue began after an update, note the version and compare the keyboard test before and after any further changes.
  6. Compare with another keyboard. Connect a known-working USB or Bluetooth keyboard, if the tablet supports one, and test the same combination. If the other keyboard works but the detachable one does not, the problem is likely in the detachable keyboard or its connection.

When the keyboard may be faulty

Suspect a hardware problem if the same key fails on its own in the test, or if the same combination fails repeatedly after reseating the keyboard and restarting the tablet. Check whether the problem changes when you press near the connector or gently change the keyboard's position. Do not bend the keyboard or scrape its contacts.

If the detachable keyboard fails on another compatible device too, contact the manufacturer about warranty service or replacement. If it works elsewhere but fails on this tablet, the tablet's connector or software may need inspection. Avoid buying a replacement until you have compared with another keyboard, if you can.

Some keys are handled before the browser

A browser test can check many ordinary keys and simultaneous presses, but the operating system may capture some shortcuts first. The Fn key never reaches the browser. The Windows key, Print Screen and laptop shortcut keys for brightness, volume or Wi-Fi are also often handled by the operating system. A missing response for one of those keys does not prove the keyboard is defective.

The browser test checks the input the browser receives. It cannot prove that a game's own controls or a keyboard's internal firmware behave the same way.
