How to test a controller's Share button in a browser

Check whether your controller's Share button reaches the browser, learn what the Gamepad Test can show, and fix connection or mapping problems.

You press the Share button on your controller, but nothing happens, or you are not sure whether the browser can detect it. A quick test can show whether the button sends input to the computer, though it cannot confirm that a game or capture app will use it correctly.

The Gamepad Test checks controller buttons, sticks, triggers and vibration. Use it to see whether pressing Share changes a button indicator, then work through the connection and mapping checks if it does not.

Test the Share button

  1. Open the Gamepad Test on the computer you use with the controller. Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth and wait for the test to detect it.
  2. Press a button you know works, such as a face button. Check that the test shows a response. This confirms that the browser is receiving input from the controller.
  3. Press and release the physical Share button once. Look for a button indicator that changes, then press Share again to see whether the same indicator responds a second time.
  4. If the test shows numbered or unnamed buttons, watch for any indicator that changes when you press Share. Do not assume the button number or label is the same across different controller models.
  5. Test the other buttons, then reconnect the controller and repeat the Share test. This helps separate a Share button issue from a connection that is dropping all input.

If pressing Share opens a screenshot or recording feature, close it and return to the test before trying again. The operating system may handle that button before the browser receives it.

What the result means

A button indicator changes when you press Share

The controller is sending input that the browser can see. The test may show it as a generic button or a number rather than displaying the word Share. If a game or recording app does not respond, check that app's controller settings and button mapping. The button can work at the browser level while being assigned to a different action in an app.

No indicator changes, but other buttons work

The browser receives the controller, but it is not seeing Share as a regular gamepad button. Some controllers reserve Share for an operating system feature, or report it in a way a browser cannot display. A browser test cannot inspect every manufacturer-specific command or prove that a console feature is working.

No buttons respond

The controller may not be connected, or the browser may not have detected it yet. Make sure it is awake and charged, then reconnect it and try again. If the controller works in another game but not in the test, try a different browser that supports gamepad input.

The indicator changes without a Share press

A remapping profile, stuck button or connection issue may be sending unexpected input. Close controller configuration software and repeat the test with the controller connected directly, without a hub or adapter if possible.

How to fix it

  1. Wake and charge the controller. Turn it on, check its battery and make sure it is not still connected to another computer or console. If it has a cable, try a USB cable that supports data, not just charging.
  2. Reconnect the controller. Unplug and reconnect a wired controller. For Bluetooth, remove the controller from the paired devices list and pair it again. In Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Devices. On macOS, open System Settings › Bluetooth.
  3. Check the controller profile. Close remapping or configuration software temporarily, including any profiles that change button assignments. Restore the controller's default layout if you have changed it, then test Share again.
  4. Close apps that may capture Share. Quit game launchers, recording tools and screenshot utilities, then reload the test. On Windows 11, check Settings › Gaming for game-related capture options if Share triggers a system recording action. The available settings depend on the controller and installed software.
  5. Try another browser and connection method. Reload the test in a current browser that supports gamepad input. If you are using Bluetooth, try USB; if you are using a wireless adapter, connect the controller directly if you can.
  6. Check for a controller update. Use the manufacturer's supported update or configuration tool if one is available for your model. Avoid changing several profile or firmware settings at once, so you can tell which change affected the button.

If the Share button works in the browser test but is mapped to the wrong action in a game, the game may need a profile change rather than a hardware repair. For more on incorrect assignments, see Controller buttons mapped wrong? What to do.

When it's the controller

Test Share in more than one browser and, if possible, on another computer. If the button is not detected anywhere while the other buttons work, check the controller's manual to see whether Share is meant to send standard input on that model. If it should, but still does not respond after reconnecting and restoring the default profile, the button or its internal connection may be faulty.

For a controller under warranty, contact the seller or manufacturer before opening it. If it is out of warranty, a repair shop can assess the button, but replacing an inexpensive controller may cost less than repairing it.

Why Share may not appear as Share

Browsers read gamepad input through a standard interface. Common buttons often have familiar positions, but special buttons such as Share do not have one guaranteed label or position across all controllers. A browser may show a generic button response, map the control differently, or receive no input because the operating system handled it first.

The Gamepad Test checks input visible to the browser. It does not test whether a particular game, console feature or recording app assigns the action you want.
