What to check when controller input fails after sleep

Find out whether the controller, connection, browser or game stopped responding after sleep, then restore input and reduce repeat failures.

Your controller worked before your computer went to sleep, but now the game ignores button presses or stick movement. The controller may have disconnected, or the game may not have picked it up again when the computer woke.

Test the controller outside the game first. The Gamepad Test shows whether buttons, sticks and triggers are sending input, which helps separate a controller problem from a game or connection problem.

Test the controller after waking

  1. Open the Gamepad Test. Click or tap the page once, then press a controller button or move a stick. Some browsers need a user action before they start reading controller input.
  2. Check whether the test detects a controller and whether the displayed input changes as you use its buttons, sticks and triggers.
  3. If no controller appears, reconnect it. For USB, unplug and reconnect the cable or receiver. For Bluetooth, turn the controller off and back on, then wait for it to reconnect.
  4. If more than one controller is connected, test them one at a time. This helps identify whether the game or computer is choosing a different controller.
  5. Return to the game and try the same controls. If the test responds but the game does not, close and reopen the game, then check its controller or input settings.

If you want to confirm the problem is tied to sleep, test input before sleep, wake the computer, and test again without changing the controller or its connection. Note whether the controller disappears completely or stays visible but stops sending input.

What the result means

The test does not detect the controller

The browser is not receiving controller input. The controller may still be reconnecting, its wireless receiver may have lost its link, or the operating system may not recognize it. Reconnect it before changing settings in the game.

The test detects it and input changes

The controller and connection are working at that moment. If the game still ignores it, the problem is more likely to be the game's input selection or the way it handles a controller after sleep. Restart the game and check its controller settings.

The controller appears, but some controls do not respond

Check the same buttons and sticks in another game or on another device if possible. If the same controls fail in both places, the controller may have a physical or firmware problem. If only one game has the issue, check that game's input settings and controller support.

Reconnecting fixes it until the next sleep

The controller itself may be fine, but its connection or the game is not recovering cleanly from sleep. Try the connection and power steps below. If the test works after reconnecting but not before, record that behavior for the controller maker or computer support.

How to fix it

  1. Reconnect the controller. Turn it off and back on, or unplug and reconnect its USB cable or wireless receiver. For Bluetooth, wait a few seconds after waking before opening the game.
  2. Refresh the game’s connection. Save your progress if possible, then close and reopen the game. Some games do not resume input correctly after the computer sleeps, even when the controller reconnects.
  3. Check the selected input in the game. Look for a controller or input device setting and select the controller you are using. If the game has a controller profile, check that the intended profile is active. Menu names differ by game.
  4. Check the Bluetooth connection. On Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Devices and confirm the controller is connected. On macOS, open System Settings › Bluetooth. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings › Bluetooth; on many Android devices, use Settings › Connected devices › Bluetooth. Menu names can vary by phone.
  5. Try a different USB port or cable. Connect the controller or receiver directly to the computer instead of through a hub. A cable that charges the controller may not carry data, so try a known data-capable cable if input still fails.
  6. Check USB power management on Windows. Open Device Manager, find the controller or receiver (it may appear under Human Interface Devices or another category), and open its Properties. If there is a Power Management tab with an option to let the computer turn off the device, test changing that option. It is not available for every device, and changing power behavior can affect battery use.
  7. Update or restart. Install available system and controller firmware updates, then restart the computer. If the problem continues, remove the controller from the Bluetooth device list and pair it again.

For a controller that disconnects even while you are using it, see Controller disconnects mid-test: what to inspect. For input that fails over a wireless connection, How to test a controller over Bluetooth covers a focused connection check.

When the controller may be faulty

Test the controller on another computer or console, preferably with the same connection type. If it repeatedly fails there too, or certain buttons and sticks remain unresponsive in the Gamepad Test after reconnecting, the fault may be in the controller, its cable or its wireless receiver. Check the warranty before opening it. If the controller is out of warranty, compare the cost of repair with replacement.

Why the browser test and game can disagree

A browser test and a game do not handle input in exactly the same way. A browser may detect the controller while a game is still holding an old connection, or the game may need to be restarted to recognize a controller that reconnected during sleep. The test can confirm that input reaches the browser, but it cannot prove that every game will select or support that controller correctly.

Test again after reconnecting, then note whether the failure follows the controller, the connection type, or only one game.
