Chromebook screen recording has no sound? Fix it
Find out why your Chromebook screen recording has no sound, test tab and microphone audio, and fix the capture settings before teaching.
You finish recording a lesson, open the video, and hear nothing. The picture may be fine, but your voice, the sound from a browser tab, or both are missing. Before recording the whole lesson again, check which sound source the recording needs and test it for a few seconds.
The Screen Recorder can record a screen, window, or browser tab, with sound, a microphone, and a camera. These are separate sources, so a recording can capture your screen while missing your voice or the sound from a video.
Make a short test recording
- Open the Screen Recorder and choose the screen, window, or tab you plan to show in class.
- Decide what you need to hear in the finished video. For narration, enable microphone recording. For sound from a browser lesson or video, select the tab and enable tab audio if the browser’s sharing options offer it.
- When Chrome asks for microphone or camera access, allow only the devices you plan to use. If you only need your voice, you do not need to enable the camera.
- Record about 10 seconds. Say a short sentence, and, if you need tab sound, play a few seconds of audio in the chosen tab.
- Stop the recording and open the saved video from the Chromebook’s Files app. Check that you can hear the audio you need before recording the full lesson.
A Chromebook’s screen, microphone, and browser-tab audio are not interchangeable. Test each source you intend to include. Screen Recorder recordings stay on your device, and nothing you record is uploaded.
What the result means
Your voice is missing, but the tab audio works
The recording captured the browser sound, but not the microphone. Check that microphone recording is enabled and that Chrome has permission to use the microphone. The Chromebook may also have selected a headset mic or another input instead of the built-in microphone.
Your voice works, but browser audio is missing
The microphone is being recorded, but tab audio was not included. Check whether you selected the browser tab itself and whether the sharing options showed a control for tab audio. A screen or window capture may not offer the same audio choices as a tab capture.
Both are missing
Check the saved file in a second player or with headphones, and turn up the Chromebook’s volume. If it is still silent, review the microphone permission and capture-source choices, then make another brief test.
The sound is there, but it is very quiet
Raise the Chromebook’s output volume while checking playback, and move closer to the microphone when speaking. If you are recording a lesson video in a tab, check that the video itself is not muted and that its volume is turned up.
How to fix it
- Check the recording and playback volumes. Turn up the Chromebook’s volume keys and confirm that the video or browser tab is not muted. A quiet recording can sound silent if the player or device volume is low.
- Choose the right recording source. For browser audio, choose the specific tab and enable tab audio if that option appears in Chrome’s sharing picker. If there is no tab-audio option for your chosen screen or window, try recording the tab instead. The browser cannot add audio that was not captured.
- Allow microphone access for the site. In Chrome, select the site controls icon beside the address bar, open Site settings, and set Microphone to allow access. Reload the page and make another short test. If you use the recorder on a different computer, Windows 11 has Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone. On a Mac, use System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.
- Check the Chromebook’s microphone settings. Open Chromebook Settings and look under Device › Audio for the input device and input volume. If a headset or USB microphone is connected, choose the one you want to use. You can search Settings for “microphone” if the menu names differ on your Chromebook.
- Close other apps using the microphone. Quit meeting, recording, or voice-chat apps, then reload Screen Recorder. Another app may be using the microphone or changing the input device.
- Restart Chrome and try a fresh recording. Close other tabs, reload the tool, and repeat the short test. If the problem continues, restart the Chromebook and check for ChromeOS updates before recording the lesson again.
When the recording source is the limitation
If the microphone works in a separate test but the recording still has no browser sound, the selected capture source may not provide audio to the browser. This can depend on the browser, ChromeOS version, and whether you chose a tab, window, or full screen. Try capturing the tab that plays the lesson and use its audio-sharing option if available. If Chrome does not offer the audio source you need, Screen Recorder cannot recover it later from a silent video.
For a class recording, test the exact setup you will use: the same tab, microphone, and audio playback. If other screen-recording problems remain, see Screen recording has no sound: what to check.
