Check video input before a video podcast
Check which camera your browser sees, compare its preview and frame rate, then choose the right video input in your podcast app before recording.
You set up the lights and microphone, but the podcast recording app may still be using the laptop camera, a virtual camera, or the wrong webcam. A quick check before recording can help you confirm which camera is active and whether its picture looks right.
Start with the Camera Test to check the live preview, resolution, and frame rate in your browser. Then compare that result with the camera selected in your recording app. The browser and the app can use different inputs, so check both.
Check the video input
- Open the Camera Test. When your browser asks for camera access, allow it so the test can show a live preview.
- Look at the preview. Check whether it shows the camera angle you expect, such as your external webcam rather than the laptop's built-in camera.
- Note the resolution and frame rate shown by the test. If the page offers a camera list, select each camera in turn and check which preview matches your podcast setup.
- Open your podcast recording app and find its camera or video input setting. Choose the same physical camera you identified in the test.
- Check the app's preview before recording. Confirm framing, focus, orientation, and lighting from the position where you will sit.
If you use a virtual camera, such as an effect or background app that provides a camera feed, decide whether you want the raw webcam or that processed feed. The virtual camera may appear as a separate input, and the browser test may not show it unless its software is running.
What the result means
The preview shows the right view
The browser is receiving video from the camera you expected. This confirms that the camera works in the browser, but it does not prove your podcast app is using that same input. Check the app's preview separately before recording.
The preview shows the wrong camera
Your browser has opened a different input, often the built-in camera when an external webcam is also connected. If the test offers a camera list, select another entry and compare the view. Use the matching camera in your podcast app as well.
The picture is black or there is no preview
The camera may be blocked by a privacy setting, in use by another app, disconnected, or covered by a physical shutter. Check permission and connection before assuming the camera is broken. If the browser reports that no camera was found, reconnect the camera and reload the test.
The preview works but the podcast app shows another view
The camera itself is probably working. The recording app may have kept an earlier input selection or may be using a virtual camera. Change its video input and check its preview again. Do not rely on the browser test alone to verify the app's final output.
The resolution or frame rate is lower than expected
The browser may be using a lower capture mode, or another app may already be using the camera. Try closing video apps and testing again. The result can also differ from the settings available in your recording app, so judge the final setup using that app's own preview and recording options.
How to fix the wrong or missing input
- Select the camera in the recording app. Open its video or camera settings and choose the intended device, not just a generic option such as default. If you use a virtual camera, select it only when you want its effects or background.
- Close apps that may be using the camera. Quit video-call, streaming, camera, and virtual-camera apps, then reopen the podcast app. Some devices or browsers cannot share a camera smoothly between several apps.
- Check browser permission. Open the site permissions from the icon beside the browser address, allow camera access for the test, and reload the page. Every tool that uses a camera asks for permission first.
- Allow camera access in the operating system. In Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera. Turn on Camera access and Let desktop apps access your camera if you use a desktop recording app. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow access for your browser and recording app.
- Reconnect the camera. Unplug an external webcam and connect it again. Try a different USB port, and connect it directly to the computer instead of through a hub while troubleshooting.
- Restart the browser or computer. Close the browser fully and reopen it. If the camera is still missing or another app appears to hold it, restart the computer and test again before recording.
Check the final recording setup
A browser preview is useful for identifying a camera, but it cannot guarantee that your podcast app will record the same image or settings. The app may apply its own crop, background effect, resolution limit, or orientation. Make a short test recording in the app, then play it back to confirm that the intended camera, framing, and motion all look right.
If the camera fails in the browser and in more than one recording app after you have checked permissions and connections, test it on another computer. If it is still missing or its image repeatedly cuts out, check the webcam's warranty or arrange a repair or replacement.
