Check a specific font family for a multilingual brochure

Check whether a specific font family is installed and covers every script in your brochure, then fix missing fonts or unsupported characters.

A brochure can look fine on your computer and show blank boxes or substitute letters on someone else’s. Before sending it to print, check that the exact font family is installed and preview the languages and characters your brochure uses.

The Installed Fonts tool lists fonts on your computer and lets you preview your own text. It can help you check both the family name and whether the letters in your sample appear as expected.

Check the font family and your text

  1. Open the Installed Fonts tool in Chrome or Edge on a computer. Those browsers provide the fullest version of the tool. Other browsers may show a reduced list or none.
  2. Look through the font list for the family name exactly as it appears in your design app. Check the family name, not just the font file name or a style such as Bold.
  3. Use the preview with text copied from the brochure. Include a full line in each language, along with names, accents, punctuation, and any special symbols that must print correctly.
  4. Inspect the preview closely. Check for blank squares, missing marks, unexpected changes in letter shape, and places where one character seems to use a different style.

Test the text that will actually appear in the brochure, not just a generic alphabet. Some fonts cover Latin letters but lack characters used in other scripts or less common languages. A sample from the real copy is more useful than a short phrase chosen only to look attractive.

What the preview tells you

The exact family appears and every character looks right

The font is available to the browser on this computer, and the preview can display your sample. This is a good first check, but it does not guarantee that your design app is using that font or that the font will be available on another computer. Confirm the family in the app before exporting or sending the brochure.

The family name does not appear

The font may not be installed, may have a different family name, or may not be visible to the browser you are using. Check the font’s name in your design app or operating system. Then try the tool in Chrome or Edge on a computer, since other browsers may not provide the same font access.

The family appears, but some characters are missing

The installed font may not contain every character in your copy. A blank box or a visibly different letter can mean the app is showing a fallback font, which is a substitute used for characters the chosen font cannot display. You may need another font with broader language coverage or a separate font for the missing script.

The preview looks right, but the brochure looks different

The design app may be using another font, a different version, or its own fallback. The browser preview checks what it can display from the computer’s installed fonts. It cannot confirm which font your layout app used or what another computer will substitute.

How to fix a missing or incomplete font

  1. Confirm the family name. Compare the name in the Installed Fonts list with the font choice shown in your design app. A file name can differ from the family name, and a family can include separate styles such as Regular, Italic, and Bold.
  2. Install the font from a trusted source. On Windows 11, open Settings › Personalization › Fonts to check installed fonts or add a font file. On macOS, open the Font Book app and use its option to add the font. Only install files you trust.
  3. Restart the design app. Some apps do not refresh their font lists while open. Close and reopen the app after installing the font, then select the family again.
  4. Check for a style mismatch. If regular text works but bold or italic text changes unexpectedly, confirm that the family includes those styles. The app may be creating a synthetic style or substituting another font when a real style is missing.
  5. Choose a font that includes the missing script. If characters are absent from the font, reinstalling the same file will not add them. Pick a font that supports the needed characters, or use a second font for the language that is missing. Preview the complete text again.
  6. Check the exported brochure on another device. If the recipient does not have the font, their software may substitute a different one. Follow your design app’s export options for embedding fonts in a PDF, or ask the print provider how they want font files supplied.

Why one family name may have several entries

A font family can include many separate styles and versions. For example, a family might have Regular, Medium, Bold, and Italic faces, or older and newer files with similar names. Seeing the family in the browser list does not mean every style is installed. Check the specific weights and styles used in your brochure, especially if headings or emphasized text appear different from body copy.

Some scripts also combine marks with base letters, or use characters that are uncommon in everyday text. Include the actual words and punctuation from your brochure in the preview. If the sample looks correct in the tool but not in the layout app, check the app’s selected font and export settings rather than assuming the font file is damaged.

The Installed Fonts preview checks fonts available on the computer you are using, so repeat the check on any other computer that will edit or export the brochure.
