Camera overlay missing in Screen Recorder? Fix it
Find why your webcam overlay is missing from a Screen Recorder video, test camera access, and fix browser, system, or capture settings.
You recorded an asynchronous team update, but the saved video shows only your screen. Or the camera preview is missing before you even start. The problem may be camera permission, the selected camera, or the way the recording was set up.
Use the Screen Recorder to check the camera overlay and make a short test recording. If you need to confirm that the camera itself works, try the Camera Test too.
Check the camera overlay
- Open the Screen Recorder on a computer. Screen Recorder does not work on phones.
- Allow camera access if your browser asks. If you also want to narrate, allow microphone access as well.
- Use the recorder's camera controls to select a camera and turn on its overlay. If your computer has more than one camera, check that the selected one is the webcam you expect.
- Start a short test recording, speak briefly, and move a window or pointer on screen. Play the resulting video to check whether it contains both the screen and the camera overlay.
A preview alone is not enough to confirm the finished video. Check the recorded clip itself, because a camera can appear in a preview while the recording is being captured differently.
What the result means
The camera is visible in the saved clip
The camera and overlay work. If the longer team update has no camera image, its recording may have started before the overlay was enabled, or the camera may have been turned off during the take. Repeat the setup before recording again.
The overlay is blank or missing in the preview
The recorder may not have camera permission, may be using the wrong camera, or may not be receiving a camera feed. Check the camera in the Camera Test. If its live preview works there, focus on the Screen Recorder's camera controls and browser permission.
The camera works in the test, but not in Screen Recorder
The webcam itself is probably working. The browser may have a separate permission state for the recorder, or another app may be using the camera. Close other video apps and check permission for the page where Screen Recorder is open.
The Camera Test also has no live preview
This points to a blocked camera permission, the wrong input device, or a camera connection problem. Try the fixes below before deciding that the webcam is faulty.
Fix the missing overlay
- Allow camera access for the page. Click the site controls beside the browser's address bar, set Camera to Allow, then reload Screen Recorder. If the browser asks again, choose the camera you want to use.
- Check system camera privacy. On Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera and turn on camera access and desktop app access. On macOS, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow your browser. Close and reopen the browser after changing permission.
- Close apps that may be using the camera. Quit video meeting, streaming, and camera apps, including any that remain open in the background. Then reload the recorder and check its camera preview again.
- Choose the right camera and enable the overlay again. A laptop may list its built-in camera and an external webcam separately. If the preview stays blank, select another listed camera, then check that the overlay is enabled before recording.
- Allow screen capture on a Mac. If the camera appears but the screen portion is blank, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and allow your browser. Some macOS versions call this setting Screen Recording. Restart the browser after changing it.
- Reconnect an external webcam. Unplug it, connect it directly to another USB port if available, and reload the page. A hub or loose connector can interrupt the camera feed.
When the webcam may be faulty
If the Camera Test cannot show a preview in more than one browser after you have allowed access, check that any physical privacy shutter is open and that the cable is secure. For an external webcam, test another USB port or computer. If it still produces no image, the camera or its cable may need repair or replacement. For a built-in camera, contact the computer maker or a repair shop, especially if the device is under warranty.
Screen sharing and camera permission are separate
Allowing the camera does not automatically allow screen capture. The browser may show one prompt for the camera and a separate chooser for the screen, window, or tab to share. Choose the content you intend to show, then check that the camera overlay is still enabled in Screen Recorder. If you change the shared source, make another short test and play it back before recording the full update.
Screen Recorder runs in your browser, and the recording stays on your device. Nothing you record is uploaded.
