What a browser graphics score cannot tell you about VRAM
A browser graphics score measures rendering speed, not VRAM capacity. Learn what the test can reveal, what it cannot, and where to check GPU memory.
A browser graphics test can give you a score, but it cannot tell you how many gigabytes of video memory your graphics card has. That distinction matters if you are checking a laptop for a game, comparing computers, or trying to find out whether a demanding app will run.
The Graphics Test measures browser graphics performance. Here is what its result means, what it does not measure, and where to look for the graphics memory information your browser cannot reliably provide.
Run the browser graphics test
- Open the Graphics Test on the computer you want to check.
- Run the test using the controls shown on the page. It measures shading power and fill rate at 1080p.
- Note the score out of 100, and whether the test completed normally.
- If you are comparing results, repeat the test in the same browser and under similar conditions. Close graphics-heavy tabs and apps first, and keep the computer plugged in if it is a laptop.
The test runs in your browser, so it measures how that browser and computer perform together. It is not a specification report for the graphics card.
What the result means
A high score
A high score means the browser completed this particular graphics workload quickly compared with lower scores on the same test. It can help you compare a computer with itself after a driver change, or compare two computers using the same test and similar conditions.
It does not translate directly into a game frame rate, prove that a game will run well, or confirm that the graphics card has enough memory for a particular project. Games and creative apps use different features and workloads.
A low or inconsistent score
A lower result can come from a slower graphics processor, but the score can also change with browser settings, graphics drivers, power-saving mode, heat, or other work happening on the computer. A laptop may reduce performance on battery power. A browser may also use a different graphics processor than you expected.
Repeat the test under consistent conditions before treating a small difference as a hardware problem. If the score is unexpectedly poor every time, check that browser hardware acceleration is enabled and that the graphics driver is up to date.
The score does not show VRAM capacity
VRAM is memory used by a graphics processor. The Graphics Test score is not a memory reading: it does not report the card's installed VRAM in gigabytes, how much VRAM is currently in use, or how much remains available to a game.
Browsers do not provide a consistent, dependable way for a website to read the exact physical VRAM capacity. They may expose limited graphics details, but those are not a reliable substitute for the graphics memory reported by the operating system or hardware maker.
Check the reported graphics memory
In Windows 11
- Open Settings › System › Display › Advanced display.
- Select the display you want to check, then open Display adapter properties.
- Look at Dedicated Video Memory on the Adapter tab. You can also open Task Manager › Performance › GPU and check the dedicated and shared GPU memory figures.
Windows may show separate figures for dedicated memory and shared system memory. Shared memory is borrowed from regular system RAM. It is not extra physical VRAM on the graphics card. If your computer has more than one GPU, check which GPU the display or application is using.
In macOS
Open Apple menu › System Settings › General › About, then open System Report and select Graphics/Displays. The information shown depends on the Mac model. On Apple silicon Macs, the CPU and GPU use unified memory, so there may not be a separate VRAM capacity like there is on a graphics card with its own memory.
Why VRAM numbers can be confusing
A computer with integrated graphics may use part of its system RAM for graphics rather than having a separate pool of memory chips. The operating system can report an amount available to graphics, but that does not mean the same amount is permanently reserved or equivalent to dedicated VRAM.
Even a dedicated VRAM figure does not say how well a particular app will run. A program may need a certain GPU model, graphics feature, or memory bandwidth, which describes how quickly data moves to and from the graphics processor. Memory capacity is only one part of the requirement.
Use the right number for the question
Use the browser score to compare graphics performance in this test. Use the operating system's report or the computer manufacturer's specifications to check reported graphics memory. For a game or app, compare the exact GPU model and memory requirements with its published requirements, especially if you plan to use high-resolution textures or large creative projects.
A strong browser score can be useful, but it cannot confirm that a graphics card has the VRAM a specific app needs.
