Browser camera shows black frames after opening another app
Find out why your browser camera turns black after another app opens, then restore the preview by checking camera access, permissions, and device selection.
Your browser camera preview was working, then you opened a meeting app, camera utility, or another browser tab and the picture turned black. That does not automatically mean the camera is broken. The other app may have taken control of the camera, or the browser may not have recovered when you switched back.
Test the camera on its own first, then reopen the other app and watch what changes. The Camera Test shows a live preview, resolution, and frame rate, which can help you separate a camera problem from an app or permission conflict.
Check the camera before and after opening the other app
- Open the Camera Test in your browser. Allow camera access when the browser asks, then wait for the live preview.
- Note whether the preview is clear and whether the resolution and frame rate appear. If the preview is already black, troubleshoot camera access before opening another app.
- Leave the test open and launch the app that usually triggers the problem, such as a video call or camera utility. Switch back to the browser and see whether the preview recovers.
- Close the other app completely, return to the test, and reload the page if the image stays black. Check the preview again before reopening the app.
On a phone or tablet, switching away from the browser can pause its camera stream while another app is in front. Return to the browser and reload the test if the preview does not resume on its own.
What the result means
The preview works again after you close the other app
The camera is probably working, and the issue is related to how the two apps share or release it. Some devices let several apps use a camera, while others pause one stream when another app opens. The browser may also need a reload to request a fresh stream.
The preview stays black in the test, but works in the other app
The camera itself can produce an image, so check the browser's permission for this site and confirm that the browser is allowed to use the camera in system settings. If the camera works in one app but not another, the app-specific checks in Camera works in one app but not another may help.
The preview is black in every app
The problem is more likely to be a privacy shutter, a camera connection, an operating-system permission, or the camera hardware. Check the quick fixes below, then test the camera in another app or on another device if you can.
The preview appears, then freezes or turns black repeatedly
This points to an interrupted camera stream, a second app reopening the camera in the background, or a connection that is not stable. A USB webcam may disconnect briefly, and a built-in camera may be disabled by a privacy switch or keyboard control.
How to fix it
- Close the other app completely. Quit the video-call app or camera utility, not just its window. Check the system tray on Windows or the menu bar and Dock on macOS for an app still running. Then reload the browser test.
- Check the camera's physical switch. Open any privacy shutter and check for a camera switch or key on the laptop. Some laptops use a function-key shortcut, but those keys are handled by the operating system and are not detected by a browser test.
- Allow camera access in the browser. Open the site permissions from the icon beside the address bar, set camera access to allow, and reload the page. If the browser asks you to choose a camera, select the one you intend to test.
- Check system camera permissions. In Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera. Turn on camera access and access for desktop apps, and make sure the browser and the other app are not blocked. On macOS, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow access for the browser and the app you want to use.
- Check phone permissions. On Android, open Settings › Apps › your browser › Permissions › Camera and allow camera use. On iPhone, check Settings › Apps › Safari › Camera, or the camera permission for the browser you use. When you switch back from another app, reload the browser page if its preview remains black.
- Reconnect an external camera. Unplug a USB webcam, wait a few seconds, and connect it directly to another port if available. Avoid testing through a loose hub or adapter. For a wireless camera, check that its connection is active.
- Restart the browser and computer. Close all browser windows, reopen the browser, and test again. If the camera still fails in multiple apps, restart the computer to release a camera session that may have been left open.
When it may be a camera or connection fault
If the camera stays black in the browser and in other apps after permissions are allowed and the computer has restarted, test it on another computer if possible. If a USB webcam works there, the original computer or its software is the likely cause. If it fails on both, inspect its cable and connector. A built-in laptop camera that is missing or black in every app may need service, especially after a drop or liquid damage.
Before arranging a repair, note whether the camera appears in the operating system, whether its privacy light turns on, and which apps you tested. Those details help support staff narrow down the fault.
Why opening another app can interrupt the preview
A browser does not receive a permanent video feed. It asks the operating system for a camera stream, and the browser may lose that stream when another app starts using the camera or the page moves to the background. Some camera drivers and privacy utilities also stop or restart access when the active app changes. The browser can then show black frames until it requests the stream again.
Opening two camera apps does not always cause a conflict. It depends on the camera, operating system, driver, and apps involved. If the problem happens only with one app, update that app and check its camera selection and privacy controls before assuming the webcam needs replacement.
The Camera Test runs in your browser. Its live preview is used to check the camera, and the test does not upload camera video.
