Black screen recording on a low-storage laptop? Fixes

A screen recording shows a black window on a low-storage laptop? Test the capture source, free space, and browser permissions, then try these fixes.

You finish a screen recording, open the file, and see a black window instead of the app you were showing. On a laptop with little free space, it is easy to blame storage, but a black picture can also come from the selected capture source, a blocked permission, or protected video content.

Test the recording outside the app that gave you trouble. The Screen Recorder can capture a screen, window, or browser tab, so you can check whether the problem follows one source or affects every recording.

Test the screen recording

  1. Open the Screen Recorder on your laptop. It does not work on phones.
  2. Choose a simple capture source, such as a browser tab with ordinary text, and start a short recording.
  3. Stop the recording and play it back. Check both the picture and sound, then note whether the file saves successfully.
  4. If the tab recording works, make another short test with the affected app or window. If it does not, choose the full screen in the browser's screen-sharing chooser and test again.

Keep the tests short, especially when the drive is nearly full. A few seconds is enough to see whether the captured picture is black and whether the recording can be saved.

What the result means

Only one app or window is black

The recorder can capture video, but that particular source is not being captured normally. The app may block screen capture, or the content may be protected, such as a movie from a streaming service. Try capturing a different part of the same app. If only protected video stays black, that can be an intentional restriction, not a fault with the laptop.

The browser tab records, but the selected window does not

The issue is likely tied to the capture source or the browser's screen-sharing permission. Re-select the window in the chooser and make sure you have selected the correct one. If the window is minimized or covered, bring it to the front and test again.

Every source records as black

The browser may not have screen-recording access, or the browser or graphics system may be stuck. Check the operating system's permission on a Mac, reload the page, and try another browser. A short test in a second browser also helps separate a browser-specific problem from a system-wide one.

The recording is black, incomplete, or will not save

Very low free space can prevent a recording from being completed or saved, especially if the laptop is also using disk space for other tasks. Free space and repeat a short test. A successful test does not prove the original app is capturable, but it shows that the recorder can make and save a basic clip.

How to fix it

  1. Choose a different capture source. In the browser's screen-sharing chooser, select the tab, window, or full screen you actually want to record. If one source is black, try a harmless text page or another ordinary app to check whether the problem is limited to that source.
  2. Free up storage space. Empty the Recycle Bin on Windows or the Trash on macOS, remove files you no longer need, and move large personal files to storage you trust. On Windows 11, check Settings › System › Storage. On macOS, check System Settings › General › Storage. Leave several gigabytes free if you can, then make a brief test recording before attempting a long one.
  3. Allow screen recording on your Mac. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and allow the browser you are using. Quit and reopen the browser after changing access, then test again. Windows 11 generally asks you to choose what to share in the browser's screen-sharing chooser rather than using the same system permission page.
  4. Close other recording and video apps. Quit other screen recorders, video meeting apps, and apps that may be using the same display or camera resources. Close unnecessary browser tabs too. This can reduce memory and processor load on a laptop with limited resources.
  5. Exit full-screen mode and retry. If the affected app is full screen, switch it to a window and select that window in the chooser. Some apps, graphics modes, or protected playback paths do not provide a normal image for browser capture.
  6. Restart the browser, then the laptop. Reload the page first. If recordings still appear black, restart the browser and run a new test. Restart the laptop if the browser or display capture may be stuck, then check that enough storage remains before recording again.
  7. Update or switch browsers. Install available updates for your browser and operating system. If the same source is black in one browser, test it in another supported desktop browser. If only a particular application remains black, contact that app's support or use an approved recording method for it.

When storage is the main problem

Storage trouble is more likely if the recorder cannot finish saving, the resulting file is unusually short, or the problem began after the drive filled up. A black image by itself does not confirm that storage is the cause. Compare a short recording of a simple browser tab before and after freeing space. If the short clip works after cleanup but the target app remains black, investigate the capture source or permission instead.

A browser recording uses system resources while it captures and saves the file. Closing large apps and keeping the laptop plugged in can help on a low-spec device, but neither step overrides an app's capture restrictions. Do not delete files you need just to make room. Back them up or move them first.

Keep the test private

Screen recordings can include private messages, account details, or notifications. Close anything you do not want in the clip before recording. With TooLab's Screen Recorder, the recording stays on your device and is not uploaded.
