Battery API exposure after changing the user-agent
Check whether changing your browser's user-agent affects battery data, compare Battery Meter and System Info, and learn what a missing reading means.
You changed your browser's user-agent and now a site shows different battery information, or no battery information at all. The user-agent is a browser label that tells sites what browser and platform they may be dealing with, but changing it does not add battery hardware or automatically enable browser features.
Compare the same device before and after the change with Battery Meter and System Info. These checks can show whether the browser is reporting battery data, not whether the battery is healthy.
Check battery data before and after the change
- Open Battery Meter before changing the user-agent. Note whether the tool shows a charge level, charging state, time remaining, or drain rate.
- Open System Info and note whether it includes battery details. Also open Browser Info to check the browser version, engine, privacy details, and supported features.
- Change the user-agent using the same browser setting, developer tool, or extension you used before. Reload the TooLab tools, then check Battery Meter and System Info again.
- Keep the computer plugged in or unplugged consistently while comparing. Battery charge and drain values can change naturally, so focus first on whether battery data is present at all.
For a useful comparison, keep the device, browser, browser profile, and network the same. If you are using device emulation as well as a user-agent override, turn emulation off for one comparison. Emulation can change more than the user-agent string.
What the result means
Battery data appears both before and after
The browser is exposing battery information in both cases. Any changed charge, time remaining, or drain rate may simply reflect a change in power use or charge state. Repeat the check under similar conditions before treating a small difference as meaningful.
Battery data disappears only with the changed user-agent
The override or emulation setup may be changing how the browser exposes features, or the page may be taking a different code path based on the user-agent. Restore the normal user-agent and reload. If the data returns, that points to the override setup or site behavior, not a suddenly failed battery.
Battery data is missing both times
The browser may not provide battery information on this device, or it may restrict the feature for privacy or compatibility reasons. Battery Meter and System Info can only show what the browser reports. A missing reading by itself does not mean the physical battery is disconnected or damaged.
System Info shows a battery, but Battery Meter does not
The tools may be receiving different available details, or the browser may not expose all battery fields to every page. Reload both tools and check again. Browser Info can help you confirm which browser and engine you are testing, but it does not prove that every battery feature is available.
How to check and fix the difference
- Undo the user-agent override. Turn off the extension or developer-tool override you used, and disable device emulation if it is on. Reload the page and compare again. The exact control depends on the browser and extension.
- Check whether the operating system sees the battery. In Windows 11, open Settings › System › Power & battery. On a Mac, open System Settings › Battery. If the operating system has no battery information on a laptop, investigate that separately from the browser test.
- Check the actual browser, not just its label. A changed user-agent can make a site display a different browser or platform name, but it does not install another browser engine. Use Browser Info to review the browser and engine details reported by the current session.
- Try a normal browser window. Open TooLab in a regular window with the override disabled. Privacy extensions, hardened settings, or a managed browser configuration can affect which features a page can access. Do not turn off security protections broadly just to make a battery reading appear.
- Update and restart the browser. Install an available browser update, close all browser windows, reopen it, and repeat the comparison. If the feature still appears only in one browser, use the browser that reports it or check the browser maker's official support information.
What battery data can and cannot tell you
A browser battery reading is a status report, not a battery diagnostic. Battery Meter can show the charge level, charging state, estimated time left, and current drain rate when the browser provides those values. It cannot confirm battery capacity, wear, or cycle count. A value such as time remaining is an estimate and can move as your workload changes.
Battery Meter and Charger & Cable Test appear only on devices whose browser reports a battery. A desktop computer without a browser-visible battery may not show these tools, even if it has an uninterruptible power supply or another external power source.
If the operating system also fails to show a laptop battery, restart the device and check its power settings. If the battery remains absent, or the computer shuts down unexpectedly, contact the manufacturer or a repair shop. If the operating system reports it normally and only a browser test lacks data, treat that as a browser exposure limit rather than proof of battery failure.
